I have been shopping at Michael's since the store was opened in the Clairemont Square. I have been an artist my whole life, through all kinds of mediums. Whatever kick I get on, a trip to Michael's is always in order. Yesterday I was looking for a 6th grade graduation, and craft projects I could do with my 2+ year old grandson while I am in Boston visiting. The time before, I was baking...got all kinds of professional baking tools. Over the years I have knitted very badly, made hats for babies in NICU, painted anything and everything, made wedding and prom corsages, calligraphy, beading, diamond dot painted, sewed, sketched, and raised two sons through every project K-12 threw at us. (Both my sons came out fine, even with the crazy art stuff. That's just the shopping! The service has really been great, especially in the last decade. Finding help is pretty easy, lots of staff on the floor. When the lines form, the checkout area goes from one register, to 6 or 8! The staff is easy to talk to, friendly and upbeat. The free children's projects in store are great with a craft to take home. The inventory is beefy, I don't remember any "out of stock" signs, or "the shipment" is unpacked, late, or didn't send that specific item. Many folks want to hear the downside of everything. My attitude is that repetitive great service is the norm. Everyone makes mistakes, has a bad day, misunderstands...Our human nature insists on goof ups. In closing, I forgot about model airplanes, balsa wood towns, glow in the dark poster boards, velvet painting, mad-libs and good...

I'm a daughter of God, I'm an American citizen, I'm white, I'm a Mom of 3, I'm human and I very much dislike self-checkout. I went to Michael's to get Mod Podge because I'm out. I'm doing a craft item for church and had extra time yesterday morning before I needed to pick my daughter up from school. It's minimum day for her. I get the mod podge, find some new and inexpensive paint brushes and add those to my hand. I've made my way to the front and stand in line. The young cashier says, "Ma'am the self checkout is open." I immediately said, "No I'd rather have you check me out." She then says, "You'll have to go to self checkout, I can't help you." My eyes got large and said, "nah I'm good, I can get this at Hobby Lobby or another craft store." She then told me, "It's company policy now for us to tell you you have to use the self checkout." Company policy to NOT help a person out at check out with another person. What happens when the machines go down because something is wrong with the wifi? I was blown away. People steal at those self checkouts all the time. It's not a better system. In fact it's going to take jobs away.
I put the stuff down and left. No way am I going to be helping them make money if they can't help...
