About 4 months ago, I started my search for pillows like the ones I had slept on in a hotel in Japan. I wanted one side to be wool, and the other buckwheat hull, with the two parts seperated in different pockets.
I was finally able to find a store that sold them - The Futon Shop- and headed out to San Mateo. Unfortunately, the San Mateo store was a showroom. There were items for sale, but not quite what I wanted. The sales representative let me know that the factory was in San Fransisco, not terribly far away, and that they would make the pillows for me if they didn't already have them made. So I was off!
The store in San Fransisco was definitely a factory. There was a very clean and cute front to try out all the products. Burt, the salesman for this shop, a very cool and easy to get along with person, listened to what I wanted, checked the back, and came back empty handed.
However, he had also spoken with the team who builds the pillows, mattresses, and futons, and they said they could get it done that day. This was a big deal because it was a Friday and they shut down over the weekends. Burt offered to let me come in on the weekend (the front store is open still) and he would help me customize the pillows so that they would be perfect.
And that is how we ended up spending quite some time pulling out stuffing, adding buckwheat, and putting back stuffing again. We tried them out and laughed a bunch. This was really a great experience. These were truly custom pillows made to be exactly what I wanted. Burt's help as a bedding expert was extremely valuable, and I sleep easy knowing that my pillows were made by a local company doing great work. Well, I also sleep easy because the pillows are awesome.
I've slept on them every night for 4 months. My snoring has gotten quieter according to my partner. My sleep has gotten better according to my smart watch. And my body feels good resting on these pillows.
I strongly recommend the Futon Shop. And Burt, if you are reading this, thank you. You and your team have improved my...
Read moreI contacted the store and spoke to the previous manager about returning some products purchased that were not to the specifications that had been described by the store manager. He said he was working with customer service and then I did not receive a call back for couple weeks. Every time I tried calling back he was not available. Then I found out that he no longer works there and then the new manager Mark spoke to me a few times and I explained the situation to him. He said that if I am not happy with the product, I can ship it back and they will issue a refund. I asked if that is doable outside of their policy and he said to ship it back and they can refund me in full. So I spent $86 in shipping and sent back the unused products. Then last Friday I get an invoice in my email, stating that they were charging me $71 in cancellation fees and an additional $60 for shipping. That was not the conversation I had with the manager who had indicated I will be refunded in full and on top of that I spent my own money for the shipping so why am I being charged a shipping fee for the return? I called their customer service and the lady who helped me said they will make the correction, get it approved by the manager and I should receive my refund. Then suddenly today I get a really rude message in my email inbox, stating that they will not refund per their policy b;ah blah and that they will issue a store credit after subtracting the cancellation fee and a $60 shipping fee which they did not pay for and that I have 6 months to use this credit. This seems like a rip off scam to me = I call the store manager, talk to him and he says they will refund which is why I spent $86 out of my pocket to ship back the product, And now they change their story and refuse to issue my refund & on top of that they are charging me for shipping that I paid for. This is very unscrupulous practice and I have spent almost $3000 at this store - they need a lesson in customer satisfaction and retention. I will NEVER...
Read moreOver the last several years, I have bought 6 organic mattresses through the Futon Shop - including crib futons for my kids and single mattresses as well as a queen for myself and a double for a little cabin. I thought of futons as very thin and hard so I was nervous when I first look at their website. I initially found the Futon Shop because they had organic mattresses and that was my goal at the time. But their organic futon mattresses are so incredibly comfortable and really that is what has kept me coming back. The way you have to worry about springs breaking or beds sagging with more traditional mattresses are not relevant with these kinds of mattresses. They are thick like any other mattress but without all the complications. They are so comfortable that my husband who traditionally had back problems while sleeping stopped having any issues. Both my kids sleep really well on these mattresses. We bought their organic crib futon mattress and when they outgrew it, we put it on the floor as a soft play area, which they used a surprising amount. These mattresses are so wonderful that when we moved internationally, I just felt overwhelmed trying to figure out how to gauge which "regular" mattress would be a good fit over the long term. It's a big decision to buy a mattress. Eventually, I decided to have The Futon Shop ship a mattress to me internationally. Burt was incredibly helpful and we picked a version with latex to accommodate the humidity here. How we sleep is so important. Knowing we can rest in a place that is comfortable, non toxic, produced ethically and by a company that cares and contributes to our community brings me a lot of joy. I have called several times to work out my order and discuss my options, its wonderful to have real people at the other end! I highly recommend the Futon Shop! Such an asset to have these unique...
