I have called several stores around the Bay Area for the Magrit Wide Bookcase(brown). Every store I have called was straight forward with me and polite and told me the status of the inventory and if they could sell me their floor model. I was successful in buying the floor model from the Concord store and was informed that it was an experimental/test product and may not have anymore stock in the future. I needed a second bookshelf, so I'm trying my luck with the other stores near by.
I call this San Jose store and a man picked up. I ask the usual inventory questions and see if the floor model can be sold to me. I was interrupted a couple of times and felt the person was rude, however, I gave the man benefit of the doubt that the phone connection was lagging and dismiss this thought. The rep first told me the floor model cannot be sold, he said this without checking with the manager/owner. After I have explained to him that other stores are willing to sell their floor model, he changes his narrative to the floor model has already been sold to another person, so it's a first come first serve basis. This makes it seems like he either doesn't want to help me or there's something he's hiding.
When I ask if I can speak to his manager or the store owner to see if a decision can be made, he said he was the manager. I asked if he had a boss that I can talk to, he told me he doesn't know when the boss will be coming in and that his manager MAY possibly show up next Tuesday.
It is unfortunate this person is hired, because Scandinavian Designs has already been a classy brand for me. This employee has ruined the image for me. I will not call out the person's name, but I called on January 5th at noon, so maybe the store owner can track down this person if they really care about customer service.
*edit I want to add that I wouldn't have written this review if the person was straight forward with me. For example, I called the San Mateo store right after writing this review. The person informed me that they will check with manager if they can sell me the shelf standalone. She was worried that if they sold the bookshelf, it would be difficult to sell the other pieces without the more popular piece. I guess she was implying that a deal can be made if she sold...
Read moreI have been buying furniture from Scandinavian Designs (SD) ever since they took over the similar Homestore in Cupertino, CA. They have the best deals and warranty on Stressless Chairs. I love mine, since they come in 3 sizes (like sweatshirts) and it fits 5' 2" me perfectly! I decorated around it's beautiful and timeless ocean blue 'Petrol' color with ocean, lake, and sand colors.
There are also some beautiful and affordable well made furniture and accessories in their Clearance Center. I saved $800 on a handcrafted cherry dresser that had an almond-sized chip on one edge of the top. A fingerful of woodfiller and a dab of stain and it was quickly fixed to where one would not notice unless it was pointed out. Also bought the matching bed and chest at discount at other SD stores and some nice framed art prints, lamps, etc.
I moved to NV during Covid (along with many other Californians!!) but still check SD when I am back in San Jose or need a break on my long drive up Hwy 5 & 80 to/from NV. There are several SD's in the Sacramento area, which is the half-way point. The NV house is almost all SD stuff, including the 1980s ubiquitous teak dining nook table with the pull-out leaves on the ends. Best purchase I ever made! They still carry it but it now comes in several other woods (walnut, cherry, etc.) & sells for $400 instead of $100. The c.1982 teak has aged just enough to match the newer (2010?) natural cherrywood dining chairs.
What I do not like is that they now also carry a lot of Italian Modern (glossy) furniture, which are the opposite of the more natural, simple, and modern Scandinavian Design principles that shows off the beauty of the wood, slate, and other natural materials. My Techie son (whose favorite color is white) likes that ultra-modern stuff though.
SD at least had open & clean Public Restrooms when restaurants, parks, Travel Centers, and gas stations in California did not (leaving the Health Dept going nuts!). So I want to continue to support SD. ...And find an art print of the Sierra-like Scandinavian Mtns for my new house high up in the mountains. (I hope their Buyers...
Read moreI am editing my original response as it seemed unfair to the sales person. I was told my order could ship to my local store. I learned a few days later that was not possible and I had to pick it up at the store where I ordered it. I was told it would be there that weekend. Then I was told it had not shipped or that only part of it had shipped. I was told it would be there the following weekend. I have asked a few times to have it shipped to my house but was told I had to pay the full shipping fee. I feel very disappointed that, nearly 2 weeks later, I am not sure if the shoe cabinet will be available for me to pick up at the farther away store, that I then have to assemble myself. This is really just a matter of setting the right expectations up front. While 2 weeks is surprising to me to wait for a shoe cabinet, I would have been less frustrated knowing...
