This evening on date 11/11/2024 at 5:06P.M I had another frustrating experience at Town & Country Liquors that I feel compelled to share. While shopping there for a pack of cigarettes that cost $17 I was once again charged a 50-cent surcharge for using my debit card prior to me complaining to the store employees on numerous other occasions about the illegal 50-cent surcharge. This practice not only caught me off guard after I’ve already explained to the store employees that it is illegal for them to illegally charge a consumer a surcharge for using a debit card, but also raised serious legal concerns, as it is illegal in California under bill SB 478 for businesses to impose such surcharges on consumers using debit cards.

According to California law, businesses cannot add extra fees specifically for debit card transactions, and this policy is designed to protect consumers from unfair charges. I believe it is essential for stores to abide by these regulations to maintain trust and transparency with their customers.

I urge Town & Country Liquors to revisit their payment policies and ensure they comply with state laws. It’s disappointing to see a local business not uphold consumer rights, and I hope this review encourages others to be aware of their rights when it comes to payment methods. Until this issue is resolved, I cannot recommend shopping here.

I complained once again to Rocky and his coworker whom asked to come out from the back to the front of the store to discuss the illegal surcharge for the last time. I explained to the guy working in the store that I’am paying $17 for these cigarettes why am I giving you all an illegal 50-cent surcharge for using my debit card, and I also explained to him that he never ever charges me to use my debit card. His response to me and rocky the one that’s constantly illegally charging my debit card a 50-cent surcharge was that the reason he doesn’t charge me an illegal 50-cent surcharge is because he see that I’am a regular so why charge. Which made absolutely no sense.

Rocky than proceeded to speak to the other employee in their language. Afterwards the employee than tells me that he’s not the owner and the reason why he can not, not charge me the illegal 50-cent surcharge is because he’s not the one that is Toni my up the pack of cigarettes. Therefore rocky proceeded to illegal charge me the illegal 50-cent surcharge fee for me using my debit card to purchase an already over-priced pack of cigarettes that is $17 but I ended up paying $17.50 because of the illegal surcharge, and also to be clear I only pay $14 for a pack of cigarettes at other stores and other store in San Leandro nor Oakland California charge my card an illegal surcharge.

I’ve reported this to the attorney general last Sunday on 11/03/2024 I will be filing another compliant be this isn’t right and it shows that businesses has no respect or integrity for the law.
