This is not a butcher shop. All the meat is pre butchered, plastic wrapped, frozen and frankly, not worth the price. Throughout the entirety of our visit we were constantly hounded by the staff ASKING US TO BUY PRODUCTS. Despite replying "we're just taking a look around" they would go into the freezers and pull out items and harangue us to purchase them which was uncomfortable and a little inappropriate. They advertised themselves as having "European style butter" (my partner and I are both European, I am from Bretagne so I know what butter should be) and we asked them what made it European? None of the staff could answer. I asked questions about the product (how was it made? What butterfat percentage was the cream? Salted/unsalted?) and again, no one was able to answer, their reply was "Buy it and find out". What kind of response is that? I ended up buying it to get them to leave me alone and it was unfortunately very bad butter. The meat we purchased was again, a disappointment especially considering the price point and that it's FROZEN.
This is not a butcher shop. Everything is pre butchered, packaged in plastic and frozen: this is an overpriced grocery store. The staff is pushy and knows little about the products they're selling, the products themselves are disappointing and the price point does not reflect the quality of the items. Very disappointed, thankfully there are other options...
Read moreI stopped in here a couple of weeks ago on my first visit to New Mexico for wagyu, bison tomahawks, duck and some shrimp.
That bison was living rent-free in my mind's stomach. So, immediately upon returning to the North East, I reached out to Beck & Bulow for 1/2 of a Bison. Their pricing is extremely fair, and actually in line for what I pay for half a steer in New England.
They were just as attentive and caring virtually as they were in person, going so far as to saw the unique cuts of meat in half so that I could easily divvy up the order. Everything was cut evenly and carefully, if I didn't know they'd split them, I'd have no clue.
The packing and shipping were extremely orderly. I couldn't have asked them to ship much further geographically than I did while remaining in the Continental States and you'd think I asked for it shipped to Albuquerque.
It's difficult to articulate, but all carnivores should understand: the cleanliness and level of purity this meat presents itself with is incredible. You can tell that this animal has had a great, healthy, and clean life. I would and am going to consume portions raw with zero qualms, and that is a level of confidence no butcher could instill in me. This animal speaks for itself and it's clear it was cared for in an incredible way.
Thanks...
Read moreGreat spot for quality cuts of meats and fish, especially for rarer meats and qualities you can't necessarily find in the grocery store (e.g. elk, bison, wild boar, rabbit, etc). I was really excited to see Kurobuta pork belly here, flash frozen for a decent price, with a good variety of weights to choose from. They also have a nice selection for cheese and charcuterie, along with dog treats. We splurged on a bag of bison organ treats and of course our pup loved them.
Unfortunately, this spot doesn't carry any rarer offal meats or bones, such as chicken feet, pig trotters, fatbacks, or necks (parts commonly used for making stock for ramen, gamjatang, etc). I think they have beef hearts and marrow bones, but given that the person helping me didn't know what a hock was, I don't think this shop is a traditional butchery where they bring in the whole animal; instead, they source from other butcher shops and bring in fresh seafood when they can. It's not a knock against them, but I'd love it if they could bring in rarer parts so I could source everything I need from this one shop.
That said, I think this spot fulfills a niche that Santa Fe lacks. Will keep coming back when we're...
