Saw JOKER with the wife on date night yesterday. We both felt the movie was very emotionally compelling and entertaining to watch. I can only imagine that perhaps the people who regard this movie in a negative light either don't take it for what it is, or have fortunately never had situations similar to Arthur's and can not relate to his ascent into his unadulterated mental state.
I digress, this review is for the theater we saw the movie in, not the movie itself.
The parking was awesome. I do appreciate the forethought that went into the revitalization of the downtown area in the 00's. The area and atmosphere was in no way cold or inhospitable. There were smiling faces and young couples oblivious to the trials that awaited them later in life as we walked from the garage to the theater. We did muse that the parking garage elevator smelled strongly of urine, that was rather unsavory.
The exterior ticket booth was closed, prompting us to purchase admission at the concessions stand. Clever move College Station. Of course I would feel quite the pennywise if I did not procure the the $20 bucket of stale popcorn and mildly carbonated coca-cola to sustain any cravings or stress eating that may be induced by such a fantastically anxiety inducing film. Total bill for 2 tickets + our aforementioned concessions: ~$40. We were informed of what seemed to be a fairly thrifty opportunity if you are somewhat of a film connoisseur; This theater offers unlimited movie views for a paltry $18 monthly fee.
The audience we experienced the film with were respectful and seemed to be of similar enough mindset to understand the motives and perhaps even empathize with the character of Arthur Fleck. The theater seats were quite comfortable and I appreciated that the armrest/cupholders folded away to facilitate the snuggling of one's preferred paramour. They could do with a bit more leg room in my opinion as I am not of particularly long shank and I began to find it a bit cramped towards the end of the film. I did not enjoy the half-hour of advertisements prior to the start of the film.
I will be back to see films here. In all likelihood I will subscribe to their unlimited film program. I was strongly disappointed I paid $20 for stale popcorn and flat coke. I will review in the future and hopefully these issues will be rectified so that I may bestow all five stars. Go see JOKER. Go see it here. Be wary of the...
Read moreThanks to Moviepass, it has now become feasible to go to the theaters again. So, I've gone a bunch to Alamo and AMC, and now I just tried Regal. Ugh. This place is the worst. Without Moviepass, the tickets would have been $11 each. Wow! I was going to get popcorn and soda, but it was $16. Nope. That's definitely the most expensive in town. Then, the theater. We were about 15 minutes early. So, then we get to watch commercial after commercial after commercial. Sometimes the same one over and over. Many of them Coke commercials. Over and over. I had to peruse my phone just to try and escape these commercials. Then, the movie finally starts. Oh, but before that one last Coke commercial. Oh, and this one is going to be LOUD, cover your ears and still hear it fine loud. I actually shouted, "We get it, Regal, you love Coke!!!" I don't think I'll be back to the Regal, unless it's the absolute only place to see something. And I will definitely bring something to do. I don't like commercials. This thing where they show commercials at theaters is very lame. And in that respect, Regal definitely embraces lame. At Alamo, they have interesting pre-show content. Very refreshing. Even the Palace way back when had oldies and trivia on the screen. That's a million times better than...
Read moreThe theater was extremely clean and the seats were very comfortable, far more than at the Alamo even. The screen seemed a bit small to me compared to the Alamo.
Bad news though, I got an ICEE which had the smell of mold after the ice had melted slightly. It was like the smell of laundry if you forgot to transfer it to the dryer and the clothes sat wet overnight. I actually got up to go inform the people at the front and they did nothing to compensate me for the problem. The guy did call for his manager but I wanted to get back before the previews ended and I wasn't too concerned about the money. I left the cup with the attendant and said you can smell it very clearly with the lid off, and they should do something about it because that seems like a public health issue.
The really bad thing is that upon leaving the theater I noticed the ICEE machines were still going full tilt, probably dispensing moldy ice into other customers' drinks. I was shocked that the machines were still going since my drink clearly had a smell to it. They must have just ignored my polite report of a problem.
Bummer. I won't be back, despite the seriously comfortable seats. At the Alamo I can get popcorn and a beer for...
