Honestly I was pretty hurt today. I (black) attended a fish fry at this church with my partner. My partner (white) sat while I stood in line.
A lady with a sling on her arm came up to me and asked if my meal had been marked as paid. I told her I wasn't sure what she meant and that I had been told to come stand there.
She then proceeded to parade me up to the checkout area again in front of a crowd of people and asked the guy if he remembered me paying. She only did this to me and the other black gentleman behind me and no one else in the line. (The other nearby folk were white)
I can only imagine what implied to her that the two of us in particular needed extra verification.
It was incredibly humiliating and dehumanizing to be accused of theft at a place that offers a free food pantry.
It's just frustrating to see that no matter how nice you dress, how politely you speak, or even if you just are trying to support a local church, there are still people there who will cut you down because of how you look.
I felt horrible that my partner felt the need to apologize to me for having suggested that we go there at all.
Everyone else there treated me with the utmost kindness, but that really soured the experience. We ate our meal in silence.
As a black person living in Missouri, I'm used to the ignorant things like being followed around stores and the like. I just didn't expect it to come...
Read moreAfter my parish, St. Boniface, closed, I began looking for a parish I could call home and also was accessible by bus. Fortunately, it was St. Pius V. The pastor is just amazing and inspired by God, I believe. I had some psychiatric problems at the time and part of my recovery was going to mass. I must have looked a mess back then, but nobody seemed to mind. The congregation is so loving and gratious. I was healed and able to cope again in life, in no small part, to this church (and Jesus Christ). You can really feel His presence there. I am happy to be able to write this review because at my worst, I was unable to type. This may not seem like a big deal to most people, but I used to type 110 wpm. I am happy to say that I am a functioning human being (for the most part) due to my healing. May God...

My friends at the time were treasured and always will be treasured. They had a school that was full and in those days a education was something we took for granted.
My heart and my memories will always shine...
