This was my first and last experience with this salon. My hair session with Jewel was so horrible that friends said I basically had a hair stylist from hell. This was a traumatic experience. I am an African American woman with curly/kinky hair and I'm new to this area. I wanted to color my hair without damage my hair. I went to a couple of salons, asked them if they have a stylist with experience with my kinky/curly type of hair. After talking to a couple of salons, I decided that Salon Shahin was the best choice in the Stamford downtown area. Boy, was I wrong. The colorist said I have to trim the hennaed part off before dying because it may lead to different hair colors. She brought Jewel, a stylist to discuss trimming my hair.
Jewel said she loved my hair and that she was going to wash, condition, trim and straighten my hair. Honestly, by the time I left that place, I was more excited about the straightening hair process than the color appointment. I decided to separate both appointments so that I could wear the straightened hair for a while.
The Jewel I met the next day was completely different from my first "Jewel" impression. From the moment I sat in her chair, I had a bad feeling about the process. She told me she was only going to blow dry my hair, said I should have arrived earlier (I arrived about 7-10 mins earlier than my appointment time) and the straightening hair process was horrible. She grabbed huge sections of my thick curly hair and tried to use a barrel brush to stretch my hair. In previous hair straightening experiences, which is consistent with other hair stylists on Youtube, they do a tension method to stretch the hair prior to blowing it out. Jewel did not do that. There many times I yelped because the heat was directly on my scalp or because the pain from her pulling my hair was unbearable.
The worst part was the mental abuse I received from Jewel. She said so many demeaning things to me. She said I must be PMSing because I was too sensitive and that I must have known the pain I signed up for. The brush ended up breaking and falling onto my arm. Rather than her admitting that she was using the wrong brush & grabbing thick hair sections, she turned the blame on me by saying that was a new brush. As the attached picture shows I have a BURN mark on my arm. At that moment I broke down crying because I was so pissed and in so much pain. Jewel said she would never do my hair again and I finally spoke up and told her I should have gone to a salon in Harlem. Honestly, I am more disappointed in myself for sitting there and letting someone I was GOING TO PAY talk to me in a disrespectful manner. I did not beg her to do my hair. When she saw me & my hair the previous day she should have said no because she is not experienced enough to handle curly/kinky hair.
Jewel is a horrible stylist; a crucial component of her job is to make the client feel beautiful from the moment the customer sat in the chair until she or he left. I felt horrible for the majority of the hair session. I cried twice in the salon because of the anger and disgust I felt. I don't understand what I did to this woman for her to be so mean to me. And a coworker, who is Asian and has sleek straight hair, told me Jewel cut her hair months back and was the first person who has ever made her feel horrible about her hair. She said Jewel said "wow your hair is so straight, what do you do with it?" in a demeaning manner.
The manager and owner noticed that I had a bad experience and that I was so shaken that they apologized and told me not to bother paying. Next time I'll go with my gut and leave when a situation does...
Read moreA few years ago, I received a haircut here that traumatized me and caused me to lose a lot of confidence. The salon itself is amazing. And my first cut was done by Tony, think his name is. It was brilliant. So much so that when I wanted another I booked with him. However, I hit traffic and had to reschedule. So the only stylist who had any availability was the black lady who worked next to him. I’m black, so , I figured this would work. Chile…I should have known it was going to be a debacle by the way the rest of the staff was looking at me. I had to start my new career the next week and I was excited for a new look. She BUTCHERED my beautiful hair. It was so traumatizing I cried and cried and went to another salon to try to fix it. But, the only thing they could do was cut it shorter. My self esteem tanked for a bit. Nothing like a bad cut. I should have just waited for Tony. So I’m the fool in the end. I also got my nails done, she was FANTASTIC! The cut I received was not the quality the salon typically gives. It was unfortunate.---
In response to your reply, this was in June 2019, right before I left for flight attendant training. The appointment was under Melly. As I said, your salon is fabulous overall, however, my haircut..was not. Thanks.
Update: this was how she cut my hair. My intention was to share my experience, this is what reviews are for. As I was leaving the girl at the front desk asked how I liked my hair (it was obvious by my face), and I told her I hated it. I called back and spoke to the manager and shared my thoughts at the time. But, at that point I was leaving to start training, remember, this was my “new look” for my new job. So, to make it sound like I was in the wrong or did ANYTHING wrong in the situation is a bit audacious. Especially when I also shared I KNEW if Tony did my cut the outcome would have reflected excellence and that my nail tech was fantastic. But, I refuse to minimize the impact the cut had on my self esteem and wanted to share. So I did. Thank you for...
