We were awed by our visit to the Cherokee Arts Center! We were welcomed by an amazing staff. Dalton first introduced us to the artwork and told us Cherokee stories behind the beautiful artwork at the Spider Gallery, Shannon took us on a tour of the arts center where we had the pleasure of meeting Dorothy Ice, a living national treasure, and then we scheduled pottery and basket weaving classes with Matt! Matt shared his family stories and knowledge as we learned traditional crafts. Each opportunity afforded us insight into the Cherokee culture, traditions, and crafts! In addition, there is an 'incubator business' at the coffee shop that not only made great coffee but provided staff an opportunity to learn how to run a business and create a business plan! They have a pottery room with multi sized firing kilns, and a metalsmith room, complete with the machines and tools you would need to create jewelry. They also have a loom weaving room, with several table top looms, and they have limited studio space available to artists to rent (they generally stay rented).
