My dad Michael Ferrauilo was a client of Peter’s for many years and Peter helped him develop a collection of custom clothing that certainly matched his very vibrant personality. Of course I can’t speak for his personal experience with AJ but I can say that we too got to experience Peter’s help and expertise over the years.

Whenever Christmastime rolled around, my sister and I knew who was going to help us think of a good gift for our dad. Peter always came up with something our dad loved. We’ll never forget that one Christmas when for some reason he decided to wear his brand new AJ shoes while cooking, and he spilled red sauce all over them. That one took a while until we were able to laugh about it!

For my wedding, I knew my dad was doing something secretive and special with his tux. It was amazing—he had pictures of my now-husband and I on his vest and in the lining of his jacket. He was so proud and happy. I wanted to do a special surprise too so I reached out to Peter to have him put a message from me on the inside of his suit jacket, hoping he wouldn’t see it until the day of the wedding. My husband also had his tux done by AJ and I put a message in his suit jacket too. Peter was dealing with all sorts of secrets and in the end he made it all happen. It was fun to sneak around my dad. He was shocked that we managed to do that without him noticing until the day of, and honestly so was I!

In March of 2020 the world shut down but Peter’s sewing machines did not. In response to the national shortage of supplies, the team at AJ pivoted their business to making masks for healthcare workers. He included my sister and I who were nurses in NYC at the time.

Peter goes beyond clothing and special wedding tributes, though. In 2021, my dad got very sick and needed his hands amputated. He was recovering and learning how to wheel himself in a wheelchair, but he needed something to protect his arms and “grip” the wheels. My dad never left the hospital, so we got special permission for Peter to come up to his hospital room several times to fit him for custom gloves. They worked great and these gloves made it possible for him to wheel himself around. They gave him a greater sense of independence and you just can’t put a price on that.

The last and most cherished gift Peter did for me personally was an embroidery for my son Michael’s baby blanket. I had already cut out a piece of his baby blanket for my dad to keep, and was left with a big heart-shaped hole that I needed to decide what to do with. I ended up drawing a picture of my dad holding my son, and Peter took that drawing and embroidered it into fabric to cover the hole. He sealed it with my dad’s signature that he used to put on all his shirts. It’s something I will always treasure.
