Nice Atmosphere but So-So Sushi. Sakura Home seems to be one of Groupon's more popular deals, and it will definitely help make this place more affordable.
Unlike traditional Japanese restaurants in Rochester, Sakura Home is part of the next wave of Americanized-Japanese restaurants missing the usual Asian beer posters and wait staff dressed up like geisha. A bridge over a water feature is on the path to your table in the dining room, with a hibachi section off to the side, which seems to attract families who don't want to eat more traditional Japanese food.
Most of the complaints about Sakura Home relate to the hibachi area, which easily becomes overcrowded and often has a substantial wait. It is common for extended families to book these tables, so if this is what you are looking for, make a reservation.
We were more interested in sushi and sashimi, so we stuck to the dining room. Wait staff there is efficient, prompt, and friendly. Prices are slightly above average for area Japanese cuisine, but that Groupon helps.
Unfortunately, despite the nice look of the place, young children have a tendency to run wild (mostly to the water feature) and parents unevenly monitor them, which increases the bustle and the noise the closer you are to the bridge and fountain.
As far as the food goes, we were surprised to find the sushi bland/not flavorful and not up to expectation. It may be the rice vinegar used or something else is missing. It wasn't bad by any means, but I've had better.
The menu also has constant warnings Sakura serves "white tuna," which is actually escolar, a fish laden with a wax ester humans cannot digest properly and is frequently responsible for sudden explosive, oily, orange diarrhea if eaten in quantity. Ironically, the fish that keeps turning up in American Japanese restaurants is outright banned in Japan as a health risk.
They should keep this fish optional in all cases (it is not now) or drop it from the menu. Under no circumstances should you order an appetizer based almost exclusively on it. You, your family and co-workers may seriously regret...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreOnly giving this place a one star because the waitress was very nice- other than that this place deserves 0 stars.
The atmosphere was unsettling- not a normal exciting comforting warm welcoming atmosphere like other hibachi restaurants- decor was out of date , nothing seemed cleaned, and I'm pretty sure my chair was going to eventually break (I only weigh 135) , the chairs were insanely wobbly. - I tried to remain optimistic.
The salad dressing is not your normal ginger salad dressing that you'd usually get from other hibachi restaurants- it tastes like dirty dish water (I'd imagine that's how dirty dish water would taste) - the waitress was super nice and brought me another salad without the dressing and old oil on the side. The salad was not fresh and you can tell it came from a contaminated refrigerator just by the taste of it.
You have to pay an additional $4.99 for hibachi noodles- which they're not even real hibachi noodles- it's literally angel hair pasta and is hard by time it's served because angel hair pasta is NOT meant to be cooked like that- it was horrific. Save your $4.99 on the noodles that they do not supply like majority hibachi places do.
The prices are absolutely insane for their poor quality food, environment, and service that you receive- overly priced for what they offer- they are NOT worth that much money.
The cheft didn't entertain or talk to anyone at the table- it was pure awkward silence, he cooked quick and bounced- I go to hibachi for a show and entertainment, fun and authentic Japanese food and I definitely did not get any of that from this place.
l asked for my steak to be medium well and was given it rare, the inside of my steak was still cold. š My chicken was undercooked and gross. The shrimp were bad because they had that fishy taste to them- probably the worst shrimp I've ever had and definitely was not fresh.
Save your money and seek elsewhere- this hibachi restaurant just isn't it, and the health department really needs to...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreOnly have two nice things to say.... atmosphere was pretty and the guy who cooked our food was nice. BUT OMG you can't hear anyone talk because you have so many people sitting on top of each other in the hibachi room. Waitress can't hear us talk, we can't hear other talk, no room to sit. Squeeze 10 of us at one hibachi table and we have to sit complete pressed to the table because people are directly at our backs. Tables so tiny that I sat with my sushi plate in my hands. Waitress barely cleared our table, we had to ask to have waters refilled a couple times because she just vanished for forever. We had to ask random workers for boxes and our checks.
You upcharged for hibachi noodles $5.99 to get not even a handful of noodles each. There was literally a handful of noodles shared between 3 people for $18. All our vegetables were undercooked and mostly raw. My sushi "spider roll" rice was extremely hard like it was pretty old, and the seafood that was inside was completely overcooked, or over deep fried, extremely hard. My friends cut of beef was not even the correct cut of beef she ordered, lobster was over cooked. Then my boyfriend ordered scallops, and shrimp. Guy didn't even give him shrimp. We had to tell him a couple times that he ordered shrimp and he ended up walking in the kitchen and coming back with a small plate of microwaved shrimp with a drizzle of sauce. For an almost $50 plate of food he got microwaved shrimp.
We went here to celebrate my niece turning 14yrs old. We told the waitress it was her birthday a few times but then we still had to ask her to bring her a cup of ice cream after waiting for boxes and our checks for like 40 mins.
The amount of money spent here was insane to have so many issues with literally everything. Service was garbage, and I mean garbage, food was not good, and we spent almost $1000 dollars for one meal for 10 people. Wtf. Absolutely mind blowing.
Overall I will never be back, and...
