I had a couch delivered and unfortunately, the movers were unable to get it up to my apartment due to the tight nature of the staircase.
I was recommended to reach out to the NYC Couch Doctor. The couch was sitting blocking the hallway of my apartment complex and I needed to get this resolved ASAP. I should've read the reviews as it feels like a complete scam in retrospect.
I called the number and Sal answered the phone, did not introduce himself and had a tone that he was annoyed that I even called. I'm okay with directness, but he was down right rude. I proceeded I was at his mercy due to the urgency of the matter.
Within the half hour, he got back to me and let me know his guys were coming within the next hour (which I greatly appreciated). On the phone he mentioned the job would be a deposit of $250 and then the rest would be determined upon completion but in the range of $400-$850. I asked how they determine where you come in at for that range and he cut me off and got sharp with me and said we need to wait til the job is done.
I will say the 3 guys that came were extremely efficient, very nice and got right down to business. They disassembled, brought the couch up and reassembled within 45 minutes. Then, I was asked to call Sal to talk about the final pricing.
I called Sal and again, extremely rude, very short and no sense of professionalism or tact. He said it's $875...I was confused as he said it was $850 prior - I pressed him and he said well that's the tax....and was clearly upset with me for pushing. I said, I'm not trying to upset you, I'm just trying to understand....also, can you now explain to me how you got to $850? He went on and on about how it's taking apart X and Y so it = this...he mumbled through it as I wouldn't let it go.
I got off the phone and was clearly taken aback by his behavior, and mind you, this is the OWNER of this business. I expressed to the guys that came how mean he was and they needed to take a picture of my venmo, and asked the price. They were like no no you paid $250, so it's $653.25, not $677.44 - so that's what I paid.
I texted Sal and said I sent the payment and he said it was supposed to be $677.44. I let him know I was told to pay $653.25 and that is what the guy confirmed with you after you spoke with me and then again with you.
He did not answer after that.
NOTE - this is all mostly verbal and he's smart as he keeps the text chain very kosher and seemingly that he is doing his job.
It was the most unprofessional, unkind, and truly an experience that I will never seek / or recommend to this...
Read moreI wish that I had read the reviews before bringing in this company to fix my couch.
The booking process was seamless and they came within the next day or two. I cannot say enough nice things about their team who was on-site. They were friendly, professional, helpful, and efficient.
However, I can't help leaving this experience feeling completely cheated. When I reached out, I was quoted somewhere between $450 - $750, being told that is the common range for couch repairs. I thought to myself (knowing the issue) that it would 100% fall on the lower side of that scale.
When the team arrived on-site, they did an assessment and told me that it could be fixed. They spoke with their boss to get a quote and I was told it would be $750. I was immediately sweating over the price tag but knew that I couldn't not have a useable couch. I wish I had just thanked them and looked into other options.
I wasn't given insight into what actually had to go into the repair so I didn't know upfront what that price tag was comprised of but after watching what was done, I can say quite confidently that I was ripped off. The repair took about 20 minutes and did not require any additional materials on their end. They ended up removing the base, putting in a few drills to fix the split wood, and then reattached the base. When it was all said and done, I paid $816 with tax and was just completely taken aback.
I had sent a note immediately to the owner just asking him to explain the breakdown of that cost. He followed up with a copy of my invoice but did not address my additional questions. I did send another follow up but so far, have yet to hear back (which isn't to say that he very well could send me a note explaining). However, I don't know what part of their visit or repair could end up equating to $800.
I would definitely recommend this company to anyone in New York who has disposable income and isn't concerned with a repair price tag. They respond quickly, are on-site within a few days, and do everything in your home. However, if you are someone who is unfamiliar with this landscape and don't have a spare $800, I wouldn't recommend using them. In the end, I feel like I was taken advantage of perhaps because I am a woman and therefore easily duped when it comes to things like this. I consulted multiple friends after the fact and everyone laughed in my face for what I paid. Extremely disappointing given the current state of the world and economy, and a hard life lesson...
Read moreDO NOT USE. SCAM ARTISTS. PRICE GOUGERS. WAITED ELEVEN HOURS OF MY TIME. DO NOT USE THEM.
Continued to push their arrival time every hour until it conveniently became an emergency for me to justify their price gouging.
My moving company could not fit my couch through the door and had to leave it behind, so I needed an emergency mover to disassemble/reassemble. Mind you, my entire apt move was only $535 total.
They said they'd arrive from 10-1. Im waiting at my EMPTY (no electric or water) apartment for 2.5 hours when I get a text that they wont be there till 3pm. Fine. 2pm rolls around, I check if theyre still going to be there at 3pm.
When it hits 3:30 they say no, it will now be 5pm. Shitty, so I leave and decide I'll come back later. I wish I had called another company at this point. I come back to my old apt again at 6:30 and check their eta, they say sorry it'll be 7:30...
At 7pm I get a text that they're 59 minutes away according to Google Maps (this was a lie). 40 minutes later, they text saying that they're crossing the Brooklyn Bridge. Im baffled, because if they were really 59 minutes away, they would have been deep into Brookyln already. If theyre at the Brooklyn Bridge, theyre at least another 40-50 min away. It's 7:40 at this point.
I'm waiting till 8:30 when I get another text, saying they're at a cross street that's about a 10 minute drive from me. Another BLATANT lie. It hits 9pm (no traffic or road closures, mind you. They arrive at 9:20pm.
These scam artists were likely never stuck in traffic in Manhattan, they were never "on their way". They waited with their thumbs up their bums, wasting ELEVEN HOURS of my time so they could make this even more of an emergency for me to justify their price gouging.
They get there and say it'll be $850. EIGHT HUNDRED AND FIFTY DOLLARS.
My ENTIRE APARTMENT MOVE was only 535. This is JUST a couch with NO CUSHIONS (img below from that morning). All they had to do was take the arms off.
Naturally, I went off on them. Absolutely INSANE price-gouging. I had been quoted 400-600 that morning, and they nearly tried doubling it. I got them down to 700, which is STILL insanely unreasonable. I lived on the second floor and was moving to a building with a massive elevator -- they didnt need to take the stairs at all.
These people are SCAM ARTISTS. DO NOT USE...
