I grew up in this area, so I remember when this was a Hills (back in the 1960s), then a Waldbaums, then vacant, then a Great American, then a Genovese, then H&Y, now A Mart.
Definitely, this is a grocery store that caters to an Asian customer base (there are a couple of Korean churches up the road). Full disclosure: I am not Asian, so I'm sure a lot of subtleties flew under my radar.
The variety and quality in this store is beyond impressive, by any standard.
The produce department is expansive. Durian? They've got it, both whole and shelled/seeded. The seafood department is the largest I've seen and includes frozen, fresh -- and live -- seafood. I didn't know clams came that big!
The meat department has items you won't find in Stop 'n' Shop: pork lips, black "silky" chicken, rabbit, ducks with heads, ducks without heads, duck heads, duck feet, etc.
(If some of these items aren't your jam, that's fine -- just don't point and exclaim and embarrass yourself. Be cool about it and move on to something you DO like. There are PLENTY of Asian snacks and candies to tempt ANY westerner.)
And CLEAN! My God, I wish ALL supermarkets were this spotless!
My only "complaint" is that a few of the seafood and produce items that are packaged and labeled in-store need better labeling. For instance, I saw a lovely fish steak marked "SEAFOOD DEPT." without saying if it was shark, swordfish, mahi-mahi or something else. But this can be easily remedied as most items are clearly labeled.
One caveat is that it can be a tiny bit challenging if you only speak English. English seems to be the second language here (which is fine). What this means is because of possible language barriers, be prepared to be a bit self reliant if you have questions about an item. Use your smartphone to translate labels. Bring a magnifier to read those English translations (some of them are pretty small).
Quite frankly, if it's an Asian ingredient you can't find anywhere else, you'll find it here.
It's a great place and I look forward to...
Read moreTo Store Manager / Owner,
I am writing to formally express my disappointment regarding a deeply unpleasant experience I had at your store yesterday.
While shopping, I encountered a female staff member whose behavior was unprofessional and unacceptable. She spoke rudely to me, used inappropriate language, and clearly lacked basic customer service skills. As a loyal customer who has supported your business, I was shocked and disappointed by how I was treated.
Additionally, her attitude reflected a lack of proper management and training. Not only was her tone disrespectful, but her language was offensive and completely out of line for a workplace—especially in a business that serves a diverse community.
I hope you take this matter seriously. I urge you to investigate this incident and take appropriate steps to ensure your staff is trained to treat all customers with basic courtesy and respect. I would appreciate a response regarding how this will be addressed.
Thank you for...
Read moreI recently went shopping in this supermarket and I was looking for fresh produce and seafood and I saw a variety of option that I can shop for. On top of the necessities I was looking for I was also surprised by the other option they had including the snacks that I could not find in other grocery stories. This supermarket is Asian based so a lot of snacks that represent the Asian culture can be found here. All the vegetables and fruits are very fresh and it is not hard to find what you want to eat there. There is a variety when it comes to seafood and meats and it is very fresh as well. I love the snacks there and the workers are very nice whenever I go there. Also, the location is very easy to spot making it an accessible place to go to whenever I am in need of groceries. Overall, I would go back every week whenever I need to stock up on my groceries and I would recommend this place to anyone living in...
