Our son purchased at suit at the 71st St. location, but after paying, we were told they did not have his size. But they were happy to upgrade to a custom-made suit for an additional, but discounted price. We did that. (Mistake. We should have asked for a return and left.) After about 2 months (good thing he didn't need this suit quickly), he went to try it on and the jacket and pants were way too small! Another employee said that the person who originally took measurements often messes them up as he is dyslexic (really? is there not accountability done or does the company often have to remake suits?). Suit remade. He picked it up 2 days before that store closed and was told to take it to the Utica store as needed. He hurriedly tried it on (but did not SIT) in the suit, and left as staff were distracted that they were losing their jobs. He tried it on at home a couple weeks later and the pants were so tight he could not comfortably sit down. So, off to the Utica store. First, they took 10 min to even find him in the computer..felt awkward and like they did not believe him. Then he was asked if he had gained weight. Finally he tried on the pants and was told they needed to remake them. Again. "Where are your dress shoes? You always need to bring your shoes." He is 21...this is his 2nd suit. The atmosphere might be o.k. for an older businessman who knows what to expect, but he needed a slight amount of coaching and advice in buying a suit, and again, it was awkward and not welcoming. Finally we got the pants (many months after this process started), and did receive an apology that it took so long. Overall, it was not a good experience and we both decided this was not a place we would...
Read moreMy husband has been purchasing his shirts, sports jackets, and suits from Joseph A. Banks for years. The sales staff was always attentive and professional. We always knew we would receive great service. I have to admit that the sales clerks were men who had worked in men’s wear or at Joseph A. Banks for several years, but even the younger men were so respectful and knowledgeable. We loved shopping there. Today I went shopping for my husband’s birthday. I hadn’t been in our Joseph A. Banks for a couple years. I was purchasing a sweater and shirt for my husband’s 74th birthday. I found two shirts and sweaters I loved. My husband wears a 2XL/XXL which I had found. A woman sales associate noticed that one of the shirts had size 2XL and the other had XXL and told me they were two different sizes. The 2XL was bigger. I have been purchasing 2XL/XXL clothes for years. I told her that was just two ways to state the same size.they Then she began to argue with me and had another woman associate come over who agreed the 2XL was larger than the XXL. I looked it up on Google and this is what it said. “ 2XL and XXL are the same size unless they are different brands. Brand sizes vary.” My purchases were the same brand JosephA. Banks Traveler! Help me!!! What has happened to Joseph A Banks knowledgeable staff? What has happened to respect for customers? The clothes are still quality; but staff quality has definitely changed. I was...
Read moreI was there on Labor Day, early, thinking that I could get an early start on shopping. When my parents and I walked in (keep in mind, I'm 31, not 15) we were set on getting suits for me and my father. The only employee there did not greet us. In fact, I walked right in front of him, and he didn't bother looking up. It was a few minutes later that he finally said something. "I'll be with you in a few minutes." There was no one else in the store.
We proceeded to look around on our own. I went over to the employee and asked how the suits were arranged. I'm going to give him the benefit of the doubt on this next one (going to assume he didn't mean to talk down to me, since there wasn't a negative tone in his voice) "They start small (points to one side) then proceeds to get larger (points to the other side). Meaning it goes from 36 to 38 to 40 and so on." Presumably I know what small to large means, but I'll give him this one. I thank him and go back to looking at suits. He comes over and doesn't ask us how we're doing, but says "Let me know if you need anything." and proceeds to walk off.
I've worked retail before and I've purchased from Jos A. Bank before, and this was so shocking to me. The final straw was when a couple walks in and he immediately greets them, with a smile no less. "Hi guys. What can I help you with today?"
My parents and I left, and we're pretty sure that we won't...
