For War of the Spark i played in 4 events over the course of Saturday and Sunday in several locations around Cincinnati.
This being a HUGE release for WotC i saw an influx of people who:
A) Never have played the game B) Had never been to an event before
This was great i would love to see more people get interested in the game and come out and have a great time (Pre releases are generally more for fun anyways.)
One thing i would like to address off the bat about people coming out is Magic has ALOT of rules some obvious some not so much, to expect anyone to cover it would mean something of a 3 hour meeting before each event. I'm talking 20 pages of just in depth scenarios that for the most part wont come up.
With that being said
Sunday morning i showed up got registered and met the judge, talked shop with some of the employees and even got someone a promo Fblthp they were looking for the staff was A+ helpful attentive and on top of things.
As i mentioned before i had been playing events from Midnight on release until Midnight Sunday night and the event at Timewarp was the only one that started ON TIME. This isn't a slight at other shops its very typical for these events to start anywhere from 20 minutes to an hour after they are planned to start. This is because specifically in pre releases they are releasing cards NOBODY has played with (Other than MTGA players who decided to pull an all nighter to have that advantage over everyone at once again an event that is literally for fun)
The judge was informed and professional.
The only unique thing here was they pay out based on rank not on your win/loss (at least for this event.)
All around my first event at Timewarp was a blast, and i will definitely come back for more. If you havent played before i highly recommend one of two things:
Even better than that
Please reach out to the shop they were so accommodating and welcoming this was the first time i had ever been there and it felt like i was at my usual shop. Friendly staff Friendly Customers knowledgeable and...
Read moreThe owner seems like a cool guy and is typically very helpful. They have a plethora of stuff to look at. I mainly look for MTG cards and they have what I want probably 50% of the time. My issue comes from 2 things 1) it's very much a niche place where they assume everyone who comes in is a regular. Prime example being for a pre-release event and I saw no rules posted so found out during the event I did several things wrong. As a casual customer better organization and questions from the staff are needed. Event started over an hour past the listed start time and there was never any communication about it no apologies and when I made commentary about the situation the workers and other customers looked dumbfounded that I was questioning this like it was common knowledge this happens all the time. 2) the owner's son provides the worst customer service imaginable. He is not approachable and doesn't seem to care in anyway if he gets your business. The rest of the staff seems pretty good but whenever the son is around you know you're not going to get a good customer experience. It's probably different if you're a regular and he knows you. In general I love to see small businesses succeed but in order to grow substantially you need to attract new customers by providing a positive, helpful and informative first time experience. Which sad to say is hard to come by at this place. In particular when the son is working...
Read moreWalked in 8 minutes til close and got ran out because they are closing at 6pm and was gonna just do a quick scan on pokemon cards. I get it was Father's Day and you want to get out of there for the day but you should of just been closed for the day. That's bad practice of customer service. Worked in it for years and it up til closing time and sometimes after. A card shop isnt sweaty hard physical labor. I guess people dont want to work anymore. Pack Fresh and Mavericks. This place is already out of my way as it is. It's a shame honestly because I've been going here for years.
Edit(Response to owner): 6pm is 6pm. The owner of the mall placing time restrictions for stores closing at exactly 6pm isn't a good enough reason to meet a customer at the entrance of the store to tell you that the store is closing. That IS what you call getting turned around and ran out. I didn't even come close to making it to the card glass counter displays so me noticing the customers checking out wasn't in my line of sight (focus of attention). With the time being 5:53pm or 5:55pm still is plenty of time to skim a display and shop. That's still bad practice. This response just doesn't cut it. Plus, there is no apology or accountability in your review responses. Hmmm..
IF YOU ARE GONNA ADVERTISE 6PM AS YOUR CLOSINH TIME THEN YOU NEED TO HONOR IT. I WASNT ALLOWED TO LOCK THE DOORS AND TURN PEOPLE AWAY UNTIL THE...
