Sample at Your Own Risk - Parents Be Vigilant!
As a Costco Executive Member since 2008, I never thought I’d write a review like this, but recent events have left me deeply concerned about food safety practices at this location. On July 31st around 5:30-6:00pm, my 2-year-old daughter had an allergic reaction after eating a Simple Mills thin sample. The demo table only showed “honey and cinnamon” with absolutely no tree nut warning signs, despite the product containing cashew flour. Within minutes, my daughter was scratching her mouth with blisters forming on her lips. When we frantically checked the actual product packaging, we discovered cashews listed as an ingredient - she’s allergic to tree nuts. The situation got worse when both water vending machines were broken during our medical emergency, and the cafe staff initially refused to give us water until I explained it was for an allergic child. What really bothered me was seeing the Bueno chocolate bar demo with prominent nut warning signs right there in the same store. Why the inconsistency? The most troubling part came during a follow-up call with Assistant Manager Robert Menges. When I explained that my entire family saw only honey and cinnamon signage with no tree nut warnings, he insisted there were “standard big acrylic tree nut signs” posted “all day from 11am-4pm” and claimed he had checked video footage throughout the warehouse. But when I corrected him that we actually shopped after 5pm, he seemed genuinely surprised. This makes me wonder if he actually reviewed any footage at all or was just trying to cover the store’s liability. This whole experience has me questioning the allergen safety protocols here. The demo employee had no idea that cashew flour means tree nuts, management seems inconsistent about when and where to post allergy warnings, and when a legitimate safety concern is raised, the response feels more focused on damage control than actual accountability. As a parent, I’m sharing this because I want other families with food allergies to be extra careful here.
My daughter thankfully recovered after vomiting up the sample, but this could have been so much more serious. After being a loyal member for 17 years, I expected much better food safety standards and certainly more honest communication when addressing a child’s allergic reaction. Fellow parents, especially those with allergy kids - please stay extra vigilant at this location and trust your instincts when it comes to your...

My family has been shopping at this Costco for a little over 10 years now, and today was definitely the worst shopping trip I have ever experienced there. I was sent by my mother to pick up 3 cases of water and some other small items- came up to a total of $35- and gave me her Costco Credit Card. I filled up my gas tank at the Costco gas station with no problem. My problem came when I went to check out. I was informed that I was unable to use the card because the card belonged to MY MOTHER. Understandable- to a degree- as I know that it could have been raised as a fraud issue. At that point, I explained to the cashier- Linda- that my mother sent me to pick up a couple of things and she authorized the card use. She then got a supervisor over, and at that point I had my mother on the phone ready to reauthorize that I am able to use her card. The supervisor was not helpful at all. I apologized for the inconvenience and let her know that my mother is on the phone and will gladly authorize that I am able to use the card. At this point the supervisor VOIDED the transaction and took the cart with the items in it. At this point I was irritated, who wouldn't be?? I approached the supervisor and let her know that this should be handled differently as my mother is still on the phone and able to authorize use of the card. She then informed me that she will not be helping me and walked away to an office. At this point, I went to the customer service center. I took out my ID with matching ADDRESS AND LAST NAME of my mother's account and the customer service lady let me know that she would have to see if her supervisor will allow a 1 time courtesy as my purchase total was only $35. Her supervisor told me the same thing- that they were unable to assist me because my mother's photo was on the back of the card. I AM HIGHLY DISPLEASED WITH THE SERVICE TODAY AT COSTCO OF UNION. The only reason this review got 2 stars is because the customer service lady and her supervisor were kind despite them not being...
Read moreThis place is clean. It is also one of the very few stores with filled hand sanitizers. Also, Costco allows you to sample food as you shop. Excellent! Prices are reasonable when buying in bulk. The only caveat we have with this wholesaler is that their 10% markup on items does not negate nor mitigate price and service discriminations. Why should members only get low markups and the lowest gas price per gallon at $2.63 (as of 12/12/24 at 1:15 p.m. when the driver was 17 miles to E). Furthermore, the staff could be more helpful and cordial. For example, buyers were coming to Q.T.M.S. since it is in a dress shirt along with a tie as a professional volunteer. The consumers detected it since they were not getting the help they needed. You may Google Quyloon for more information.
Update (4/25/25): As chief volunteers for Quality Assurance and Safety, we absolutely love the safety lanes for shoppers who use the carts and flat beds. Job well done COSTCO/Kirkland! See photo(s).
