Clothes Encounters DC — Local services in Washington

This is my absolute favorite consignment shop to shop at in the district. They always have incredible items, if you're willing to "treasure hunt". Prices are very reasonable given the quality and brand names that they carry (Stuart Weitzman, Burberry, Gucci, Theory, Helmut Lang to name a few). The owner is very pleasant and helpful towards shoppers.

Unfortunately the owner's kindness does not apply towards sellers. I've brought in many (high quality, brand name) items for their consideration, only to be insulted. I absolutely understand that not every item will be accepted, but it is entirely unnecessary to insult the seller. I have been on the receiving end of many rude, snide remarks about how out of style my items are. Again, it's totally fine to decline a seller's items, but a simple "no" pile would suffice. Clothes Encounter is truly a haven in Eastern Market—a place where I can escape the bustle of daily life and immerse myself in their beautifully curated assortment of items. I never seem to leave empty-handed, yet I find just as much joy in simply browsing and appreciating the unique collection they’ve put together.

The women who run the shop are not only knowledgeable about the backstory of the pieces they carry but also about the designers, fabric quality, and craftsmanship that make each item special. Their expertise adds another layer of appreciation to the shopping experience, and their kindness and honesty make it all the more enjoyable.

As someone who tends to be a quiet shopper, I deeply appreciate that they allow me to explore without any pressure to buy. Yet when a special gem is discovered and purchased, there’s a shared sense of joy and excitement that has a certain je ne sais quoi.

Rather lovely experience.

I happened to have some time on me and walked inside simply to browse. I've been to many second hand clothing stores but there's a warmth and hospitality in this place as soon as you're greeted at the door. Customer service is 10/10. Friendly conversations all around, so many regulars, and if you're new (like me) they leave you feeling like you need to come back asap.

With regards to the actual store, they are the most organized, I had no problem finding my size. Everything was so clean and the prices were so reasonable. I left with 4 pieces from Ann Taylor and J.Crew for the price of one T-shirt at either of those stores. (But they also had a variet of styles to fit all kinds of preferences).

I didn't intent to buy anything, but the selection, the kindness, and the overall experience gave me alot more than the pieces I left with.
