TL;DR: Bad service, bad food, weak drinks, and plenty of better options in Chicago for festive decor. Skip this place.
We visited Blue Line Lounge for Christmas vibes, a late dinner, and drinks with friends, but it was a disaster and it ended up being one of the worst bar/restaurant experiences I’ve ever had.
We arrived at 9:45 PM, and despite the bar being busy, we waited at the entrance for over 10 minutes with no greeting or assistance, even though a sign instructed us to “wait to be seated.” Several groups came in after us, and it became cramped as we all waited. The group of six who came in after us decided to seat themselves and were served before we were even acknowledged. The seating system is disorganized and frustrating.
When we were finally seated, it was at a tiny booth in the back, despite having five people. Meanwhile, the group of six was comfortably seated and already receiving service. Our server was rude, seemed miserable, and rushed us to order drinks only to tell us several options were unavailable after we’ve decided on what to get. It made no sense to rush us without warning us about the limited menu.
When we ordered food, the server acted surprised and dismissive, even though we confirmed they were still serving when we arrived. The food was mediocre at best: cheese curds, fried pickles, and chicken bites were passable but nothing special. My Reuben sandwich, however, was terrible. Room temperature, soggy, and flavorless, as if it had been sitting out. Fries were cold, and overall, the meal felt like an afterthought and I’m truly pissed we paid for those food. The cocktails were equally disappointing – I tried every cocktails ordered on the table and they all tasted watered down and poorly made.
Overall it was just an awful experience. Terrible service, terrible food,...
Read moreFrom the moment we arrived (4pm ish), our waitress (dark red hair) was glaring at both me and my husband, making us feel uncomfortable. When I was finally ready to order, she completely ignored me to joke around with a guy who had just walked in. We decided to play a little trivia to lighten the mood and then we put it away. It was not very busy, maybe 2-3 tables in use. When I was ready to pay the bill, I thanked her and again got an ice cold glare in return. I didn’t say anything, but after we left, my husband mentioned that he had noticed the same glares directed at him, too. We’re not sure what we did to warrant this, but it definitely left us feeling perplexed. We are a mixed race couple but this shouldn’t be a huge deal in Chicago.
My cocktail was ok but couldn’t really taste the alcohol (maybe I’m just being paranoid though) My husband ordered a beer (draft), so that part was fine. We didn’t feel comfortable ordering food as we wouldn’t want to overstay our (lack of) welcome. I understand that bartending is tough and sometimes you’re just not feeling it. I’ve been there. I have worked in the service industry for a long time, but even on my hardest days I have never been rude to anyone...
Read moreI wouldn't quite call the Blue Line Lounge a hidden gem – it filled up quickly after we arrived at opening time. But for someone who walks by all the time, it certainly felt that way! From the outside, it appears unassuming, just another bar. But step inside, and you're transported to another era.
The first thing that hits you is the stunning interior. It's a blast from the past, with a vintage American vibe straight out of a 60s movie. There's ample seating, whether you prefer comfy booths or bar stools.
Speaking of recommendations, my best friends raved about their martinis, and let me tell you, they were right! They're known for them for a reason. I started with the Passion Martini, a delightful and fruity concoction. Then, I ventured into a Dirty Martini – both were incredibly well-balanced and flavorful.
The music adds another layer to the experience. It's relaxing and perfectly complements the atmosphere. The Blue Line Lounge isn't just about the drinks, it's the whole experience, from the comfortable seating to the expertly crafted cocktails. The bartender was also top-notch – professional, fast, and attentive.
If you're in the neighborhood, this place is a must-visit....
