Michaels — Local services in West Des Moines

I went in to pick up a picture that I was having framed. I put hours into making a counted cross stitch picture for my daughter’s MBA graduation party. I also spent more than I could afford to have it framed. The clerk at the framing department and I discussed the frame, matting colors and matting widths. I wanted it to be perfect for my daughter. They showed me the finished picture and it still had the basting threads I sewed into the picture in order to center it like I wanted. There were long tails of thread so it would be obvious to remove. What is obvious to me is that they didn’t pay any attention to my effort to centering it like I wanted or they would have seen and removed the basting threads. Also, we discussed that the inside matting would be 1 1/4 inches wide, but he didn’t either write it down on the instructions or they ignored them completely. They instead cut the inside matting to 1/4 inch wide, leaving the outer matting to overpower the entire picture. They were going to remove the basting threads, but said they couldn’t cut the new matting in time for the party. He told me that I could bring it in after the party to be re-matted. So after all of my work and money, I’ll be making a second pick up trip to the store and giving my daughter a gift that I’m very unhappy with the finished product. Then, I’ll probably be making more trips to get it corrected, picked up, and delivered back to my daughter. Obviously, I’m extremely unhappy with Michaels right now. They should have cut new matting and had it correct...

As ALWAYS Michael's never fails to amaze me ! My Mom & I had been in DSM for an afternoon Dr's appt she had, after which she wanted to grab a bite to eat while we were in town. As usual we stopped at one of our favorite places there in WDM ~ Hibachi Grill !!! (Yum !) When we got done eating we were both worn out after her Dr's appt taking so long that we were both ready to go home. However, I remembered I was needing some paint markers for a project I was working on & couldn't go any further til I had some.(Reg markers or Sharpies wouldn't work.) We would be going right past Michael's on the way to the freeway, it was even on the right side of the street. So when I got to the drive I pulled in, stopped in front, & ran in. I had no idea of where they would be ! Just a general area, so I asked the first clerk I seen where they were & she told me what aisle & exactly where. I was able to get in & out of there in a matter of 5 minutes (literally), thanks to the ever wonderful employees, who have great knowledge of where items are, & the store always being stocked. Frame shop is very bad, but I suppose you get what you pay for? I came in with a woodcut and a 150 yr old frame, just needed some matboard and good glass. The picture below is how they returned it to me - crooked in the mat. They said that the print itself was not straight (I'm assuming they meant the offset of the inks) and that having it completely straight would be impossible. I still politely asked for a redo, and the shop accepted. They returned it to me (banged the edge of the frame against the table in front of me as they pulled it from storage lol) and I took it home because honestly, at this point, I didn't trust them with the two pieces I worked really hard on collecting. After looking at the art a bit, and measuring, I realized the matboard itself is not completely straight with the frame. There's a .5 cm difference between the top and bottom mat, and the same difference between the left and right. No doubt, the frame itself is simply "not straight." Will save up to have it sent to a professional shop. Two stars for their being willing to redo and get it back to me so fast, but wow, you...
