I try to give pet stores a chance when it comes to how they take care of their smaller rodents, but that chance goes out the window when the pet is so unwell that they die only after one day of coming home. I bought a rat from them roughly one day ago in an attempt to get my other rat a new cage mate, as her original cage mate sadly passed away. When I go there and see their selection all the rats they showed me were kept in a poorly ventilated shelf with not enough room for all the baby rats they had in there. When I asked the person working there (who was lovely, no bad feelings about them, they just work there) how old they were the staff member couldn't even give me a confident answer. That was the first red flag that I shouldn't have ignored. From there they sent it home with me in a Chinese take out box with holes punched through it with a hole punch, not even with a little bit of bedding in the bottom. So when we got home she was covered in her own urine and feces. Rats poop and pee when their nervous, and that's a given. But the lack of care of how comfortable they're trip home was by the store was awful. Then right as I got home I realized she was really weak and had a hard time moving her legs. So for the day I had her I tried my best to keep her warm and comfortable. She had food and fresh water all accessable to her. Sadly though this morning I found her on her side gasping for air. She died this morning. Now, I've read other reviews of people buying pets from this store and the pets dying just after adoption and the store telling the people it was their fault. I know though that this isn't my fault and even though I'd like to get my money back, I doubt I'd get a refund. I've had pet rats for years and I'm studying veterinary science. I did everything right for the poor soul I took home that day, and still it wasn't enough. This isn't uncommon for pet stores to keep their pets in poor conditions like that. I just hope that maybe they consider changing how they house their rodents or just admit that they shouldn't be selling...
Read moreI have been to Pets & Such a few times, despite not living close at all, because I feel that it is the best pet store in Utah. It's a large space, with an incredible selection. But what I think is the most impressive is how well the store is maintained. I can't smell anything when I walk in the doors, and for a store that large with that many live animals, that's a feat not to be scoffed at. The store is bright and sparkling clean. You can tell that the owners and employees take pride in the store, and in their work.
Another item of note is that their prices are more than competitive. In my search today, that I will go over more below, I went to every pet store in the immediate Salt Lake Valley. Their prices swept the competition.
I purchased a Amblypygi a few weeks ago, and spoke to Art at length, and he is knowledgable, and very friendly, and I'm very pleased with that purchase!
I've always had a great experience, and been given lots of help, but I think today took the cake! Julie helped me pick out a snake. I knew the type of snake I wanted, but nothing exact. And I knew I wanted to be picky. None of this was a problem for her, and she patiently helped me look at snake after snake, until we found THE ONE! Then she explained everything I would need to do for care, helped me pick out materials to make him happy, and informed me about feeder pricing. Very thorough!
I am so ecstatic about my new Chain Kingsnake that I bought, I could cry. He is so perfect. He is everything I wanted and more, and I don't know that I would have found him if it wasn't for her patience and knowledge.
Thank you so much...
Read moreThis store has a wonderful and wide selection of items! It's kind of a pet lovers wonderland when you walk into it, and every part of the store looks clean and well taken care of.
Upon walking into the store, only a minute or two will pass before an employee offers to help you find something, happy to guide you to what you are looking for. If you're looking for pet care items, food, and decorations, you will have a fantastic time at the store.
If you are looking for healthy fish to welcome to your aquarium, you have a two in three chance of having a fantastic experiance. What'll strike you as you're looking at the tanks with their wide and varied selection of fish, are signs everywhere proclaming that their fish are healthy and that when they leave their care, they aren't responsible for them anymore.
I bought two fish that are live and active, and when my fish from a boxchain store died, I came back and got a third. A week later, the newest fish was dead, alive in the morning and gone within 4 hours while I was out.
I came in and asked about what I had done wrong and the employee told me that it probably was something wrong with the fish, after asking me questions about the tank.
If they had a refunds policy in place, I'd be a lot happier recommending this store, but as it is, I'd suggest using them as a way to find other ways of supporting your aquarium rather than buying the fish.
Pets and Such is as of this review not accredited by the BBB. I don't know what it would take for them to become accredited, all I know is that they aren't, and I don't want to buy live stock...
