Against The Grain

Well I noticed a post by Alan Edgar last year about a new bakery opening in Bowden SA. Bowden is an inner city suburb of Adelaide apx 4 mins from the CBD. Well on Friday I ventured down to Bowden to check out Against The Grain. Met Damian and his wife who run and own the bakery. Damian's background extends back to David Jones - all those delicious cakes and pastries. They opened apx 6 months ago after 12 months of renovations. Walking into the bakery it has a really nice rustic look and feel to it.

Plain Mince Pie $6

The presentation of the pie looked pretty good, a nice square pie, a light golden colour which was pretty even around the pie. The pastry wasn't flakey, a nice light feel and texture on the palate and wasn't dry. The pastry was of similar thickness around the pie. The bottom and top could have done with a touch more baking time.

The pie was packed full of a really delicious filling, there wasn't any space left. I quite enjoyed it and it didn't have that onion flavouring. The mince was seasoned nicely. The mince to gravy ratio was pretty good. The consistency wasn't too bad it could have been a touch more runny. As a whole the pie was pretty good. The serving temp was good and I dare say the pie would have held up together nicely. At 6 bucks it pretty reasonably priced.

Moving on to the second pie....

Breakfast Pie $6.50

The presentation of the pie looked really good, I was liking what I was seeing. Bacon, cheese, and egg on top. Just the look of the lid it looked fresh and tasty. It had a nice aroma too. The pie base was baked pretty good 👍.

Biting into the pie you got all those classic flavours of the bacon and cheese, the mibce was seasoned well and the mice the gravy ratio in this one lookes to be a tad more runny, I'm thinking the consistency was pretty good. Munching away got to the egg which was cooked well. All the flavours worked really well which each other on this classic pie. The serving temp was hot, an eatable temperature. I would say this would be a plate, knife and fork job as if felt and looked pretty weighty. I can't give a definite answer to if it would hold up. (we'll see next time I visit haha) The pie was priced pretty good for what it was.

They have a nicely sized dining area in the bakery so you can sit down and enjoy your meal.

So if your travelling down Hawker st in Bowden chuck a turn down Gibson st and check out this new bakery !

Thanks for having me in 👍

I think everything is great. Some of the food are a bit off like the sausages rolls but I think it’s okay overall. The service was overalls disappointing. I’m not one to criticize people customer service skills as someone who works in this industry as well. But I go there quite often and the customer service isn’t improving at all. I walk in and was expected to know my order right away even if I said I need a second to decide. They would just stare at me and pressuring me to order so I end up just choosing what i see first. Not only that but they’re not welcoming at all. No smiling. No nothing. Just stare and sometimes (rarely)smile? but you know it’s not genuine. I could understand it sometimes but as the food is not a cheap I don’t want to pay for someone who doesn’t want to serve me not only that but making me feel uncomfortable. If it happens just one time I could understand that maybe they having a bad day but we go there pretty often and it’s like this every time. It’s not particularly anyone but...

This bakery has done things to me. It’s made me a better person. The service at this place is second to none. Perhaps the happiest and most friendly bloke in all of South Australia served me. If you want the best quiche you’ve ever had in your life, come to this bakery (succulent, smooth, sensual, tasty, cheesy (but not too cheesy). I would detour half an hour just to get to this bakery. I’m currently eating an incredible cinnamon twist item. It’s insane. I struggled to choose what tasty sugary item I would devour, purely because I was graced with a plethora sweet delectable looking sweets as I walked up to the counter. Coffee is fantastic also. I don’t know what was better, the service or the food. And both were unbelievable. If I could give 6 stars I would. We need more people like the people the work at...

What a gem! So glad we visited, this place was recommended on a public forum and it definitely didn't disspoint. Good bakeries with good meat pies are hard to come by. Though their pie selection were not big they definitely didnt lack in quality. We tried their breakfast and potato pies. And I still think about how good they tasted days later. We also tried their sausage rolls, which were huge! The flavouring was lovely however the pastry was a bit dry. Great pricing for the value of food you get. Store was clean and had a rustic feel. Plenty of seats. It would be nice to have serviettes and a bin to place our rubbish. Cant wait to come back again. AND thank you for opening on a Sunday not many bakeries do 🥰

Basic yet decent. A typical Aussie bakery with quality ingredients which is getting harder to find now. The sausage rolls are great with excellent mince meat and classic Italian herbs. Berry pie had a nice filling with real flavors from eggs, which is also becoming rare as using highly processed power, just to mix with milk or water as ingredients is more common these days. It’s such a lovely hideout with cozy relaxed atmosphere. It has been a reward to myself to drop in and enjoy a cup of coffee and pies.
