Any reviewer who suggests that the restaurant experience in this place is anything above below average has limited exposure to this type of dining.
It is advertised that all main meals entitle the dinner to soup, salad bar and dessert however this is not the case in our experience. The purported fresh food served is delivered in frozen boxes or plastic bags prepared elsewhere., the task of the cook it to assemble the majority of the meals.
The fish on the menu and described as 'flathead consisted of 2 pieces of battered white flesh in the shape of 'bream'; uneatable! Steak [medium rare] burnt on the outside medium to well inside and tough! Lamb Shanks [delivered prepared] that required the meat to be cut from the bone? served with instant mash.
Soup is at the discretion of the cook; in our case we were informed the weather was too 'hot' = no soup. The salad bar consists of 5 bowls of prepared food that is [delivered in plastic bags] unmarked, unidentifiable and to anyone with an allergy has the potential to cause health risks. The absence of fresh ie tomato, lettuce etc etc is disappointing. Hot vegetable may be ordered at an additional cost and consists of a frozen then microwaved portions. The dessert consists of a limited selection of small portioned cake, returned to the 'dessert bar' and only removed when considered too stale. In our experience this would have made a great trifle but must surely be too complicated for the existing cooks. Lollies in large jars are on offer.
The White Horse is a pub, gambling casino with budget accommodation provided in the main for long distance drivers. The occupancy of the motel is generally 100% with no incentive to carry out any general maintenance or upgrade. The rooms are quite comfortable with good linen and towels, coffee, bread, milk and butter provided in the tariff.
Staff! The housekeeper 'Sue' maintains the rooms as best she can due mainly to the general poor condition of the premise. The exterior is always dusty and smelly because of the road building at the rear and the sewerage works closeby.
Bar staff serve the regular locals and many of those women are able to converse at the level of speech used by both male and female patrons. The behavior would not be tolerated in many so be warned!
Presently the place is managed overall by two middle management females who are assigned to the bistro. The comments of other reviewers relative to the attitude of bistro staff support this statement and any complaint that we had/have evolves from that section.
The place requires a experienced manager given the authority to assess the running of this place and to cull the trouble makers. Our experience with this place was not overall bad however the negatives originated from the bistro staff who regularly venture into the bar area.
The overall view of the gamblers in the TAB room is that they eat elsewhere, although the TAB facilities are fine and the discounted beer is...

From the moment my family and I walked in it seemed that we were invisible or a burden. We waited for about five minutes or more at the "please wait to be seated sign" while a waiter and waitress wiped down what looked like already clean tables, glancing at us, then at each other, they simply walked away. There were only four or five small tables of diners whom were already eating. After waiting patiently for a while we walked down to the bar area where we got ignored for another five minutes. There was one female bar staff serving a customer and another male staff member whom after a quick glance up, put his head down and continued about his way! Once we finally got a chance to interrupt them we were "nodded" at a table near by, as we were walking to our table they yelled out to grab some menus to take with us, as I mentioned it felt like we were a burden just being there. We ordered the children's food and our entrée to come out at the same time, I was specific about this. I got assured, by whom I am sure was the manager that it was understood by rolling his eyes and nodding at me...after being told there was no such thing as medium/well done meat and the correct way to cook meat, we finally got to sit down and relax. After half an hour went by one of our children's dinner came out which was steak and chips, 15 minutes later a bowl of chips came out for our second child. Once both our children had finished their meals the entrees and mains all came out at the one time which made it difficult to enjoy, I mentioned to the waiter that we had asked for our entrée to come out with the kids meals, which he replied with a nervous muttered "Oh right". I had to find someone to ask for bread which was apparently meant to be served upon being seated, as I mentioned there were only four tables of diners. Not a busy night. As we were waiting the family seated behind us were also complaining about customer service or lack of! We could not fault the food, it was amazing and the dessert bar was a huge hit with the children and adults, the only down fall was the staff. Although we live very close to the Whitehorse Inn, we will not be returning which is a shame as it has so...
Read moreWe arrived and ordered about 7:15 pm, there were no bowls at the soup bar, no plates at the salad bar and no bread rolls... A great start not... we had a table of about 10 so we made sure they knew we had all ordered so they could start our meals for delivery together... Well we waited and waited and waited... after nearly an hour they started bringing meals out in dribs and drabs no apology for the delay ... My wife had a seafood sleection which was very nice but there was of course no tartare sauce at the salad bar, just an empty bowl, when I inquired about getting some the head waitress said ok, and in about 5 minutes she came back out and put a fresh bowl on the salad bar, I would have thought bringing some to our table would have been nice, or at least telling me she had filled it up... although it made little difference because by then my wife had nearly finished her meal anyway... Chips were ordinary, steak was inedible , schnitzels overcooked, garlic prawns were an entree sold as a main course. In all from the first meal delivered to the last we waited another 20+ minutes which meant I was left eating alone. The stir fry was served in such a small bowl that it was nearly hanging over the edge. As for the bar service , one poor girl trying to serve the whole room, which luckily for her was only just half full... they ran out of things, took forever to bring our meals and they were half full, I cannot imagine what it would be like if enough unfortunate people actually ever fill the place up. The head waitress spent so long chatting to her friends that no-one seemed to be making sure everything was running smoothly. As I left the Whitehorse Inn I was singing "No No Never" to myself and that is how it shall stay, when you pay for food and service you expect to get both... Sadly neither was in...
