Booked the Whitsunday Sailing Club Restaurant “20 Degrees South” for my partner’s birthday. Unfortunately, we received one of our worst dining experiences. Upon arrival, we were not shown to our table, it was simply pointed out to us. The table was positioned in the middle of what appeared to be a dance floor with live music blaring at full volume less than 5m from where we were positioned. Diners are required to order their food and drinks separately at two stations next to the bar. We had to request where our drinks had got to as our food arrived 15-minutes before our ordered drinks. The food was ok. My partner ordered the carbonara and I ordered the steak ciabatta which was overpowered with a sweet tomato relish. Whilst eating, we had to duck under a flip flop thrown across our table by patrons from another table who were very loudly enjoying themselves throughout our dining experience. Then a woman decided to pass by our table so closely that her swinging hand knocked my plate nearly off the table itself whilst I was still eating. During our meal, the live music was interrupted by an awards ceremony and raffle draw that droned on and on and on.
It felt less like a restaurant dining experience, and more like an end of season awards night that we had tacked along to.
We promptly finished our meal and left within...
Read moreA real mixed review of good and bad. We reserved a lunchtime table. The young european barman started off this mixed experience with very minimal effort, with little or no enthusiasm, speaking really quietly with a flat tone. When asked about the available drink options he showed no interest in helping. I ended up asking one of the other more energetic staff for a glass as he meandered around looking lost. We then ordered our food. The childs meal arrived within 5 mins then my wife and I proceeded to wait more than 1/2 an hour for ours! This appeared to be the case on other tables also, where people's food was going cold whilst they waited for their friends food to arrive for ridiculously long periods, having ordered at the same time. When our food did arrive, it was fresh, generous portion sizes and really delicious. A few management tweets could easily turn this place or today's shift at least, into a far better experience. Most of the staff were really on the ball and as stated, the food was really good. Just the timing of food leaving the pass and one staff member. And great views as...
Read moreBest dining experience in Airlie thus far. Our waitress, Gillian, was a great host! Husband and I ordered the seafood tower for 2 for dinner. It was very lovely and filling, glad we did not order entrees as we wouldn't have been able to enjoy the entire tower! Asked for the oysters to be Kilpatrick instead of natural as we've never eaten fresh oysters, this was going to be fine if not for a little kitchen mishap, so we got them just with chilli and we were surprised that we still enjoyed them. The Thai coconut and ginger sauce over the mussels was to die for! Kept soaking it up with the crusty bread and took the batter off the fish and put in the mussels sauce once we'd eaten the mussels. Yum! The scallops were also amazing. We were able to take the complimentary bottle of wine home with us too, husband doesn't drink wine and I'm currently pregnant. Outside dining views were sublime on sunset but I think you'd be hard pressed to get a dining spot overlooking the marinas that isn't...
