Kelp - A Hidden Gem That Surpasses Expectations
I recently dined at Kelp, and I must say, it was a delightful surprise! From start to finish, the experience was exceptional. The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful, making us feel welcome and well taken care of throughout the evening.
The food was absolutely fantastic. We started with shared entrées, which were nothing short of amazing—each dish was flavorful and beautifully presented. For the mains, I opted for the hapuka, and it was cooked to perfection, showcasing the quality of ingredients and the skill of the kitchen team.
The drinks were also a highlight. The margaritas were spot-on, perfectly balanced and refreshing. And the wine list? Surprisingly impressive! I wasn’t expecting much, but Kelp truly exceeded my expectations in every way.

Read moreThis place had a wobbly start when they opened but teething problems over we booked up….. these guys have honed right in on what’s right for their clientele and are now offering a cracking venue with really outstanding food. Our one and only gripe (and it’s minimal) was that it might have been nice for the kids meals to come out with entree. Other than timing, this was a top shelf experience. Service staff were attentive and conscientious. Food was phenomenal. We had the octopus, the cauliflower, the market fish and the steak and all were dishes to deserve writing a review on. Dedicated care and attention to flavour profiles, plating and preparation were elite, that echos for the bar. Deserve a visit and well worth booking to avoid disappointment because I have a feeling in a few months these guys will be turning people away because...
Read moreRecently opened in Ballina and a cut above the other “fine” local restaurants. Run and owned by locals. Predominantly seafood with some options. Lunch menu is a bit limited apart from seafood and steak , however dinner menu is more extensive. Wine list is well selected with by the glass of most varieties. The wine is reasonably priced as are seafood dishes but the steaks are a bit overpriced for local market. There is a changing specials board available daily. We tried several entrees and 2 main fish dishes, both deep sea firm white fleshed fish that are generally difficult to find on regional menus. Front of house (Jesse) was welcoming and attentive and had attracted our attention when passing a week earlier. Overall a quality meal of a type that until now has been only sporadically...
