We decided to give Petrichor & Co a try after a long walk in the morning.
On arrival, a friendly staff member greeted us and advised us to pick a table either inside or outside, and we ended up sitting outside.
Once seated, we ordered two coffees as usual, one large skinny cap and one iced soy flat white. My skinny cap was delicious, and was more on the bitter side but not overpowering. The iced soy flat white was quite refreshing and woke me up instantly after a sip.
Food wise, I grabbed their free range eggs scrambled and rye sourdough toasts with wild mushrooms and tomato relish on the side; my partner was going to order their beef empanadas but was told they didn’t have any yesterday, and got the cheese empanadas instead. The scrambled eggs were good but not as tender as I’d liked and were bit too greasy for my liking. The sourdough was beautifully toasted, crunchy on the edge and chewy in the middle, but would have been better without butter on top (it is just a personal preference as I liked my toasts unbuttered). The mushrooms were absolutely the highlight of the dish, which were so tender and perfectly seasoned and also came in a fairly big portion. It was actually a mixture of mushrooms and black fungus, which we thought was a really lovely surprise. As for the empanadas , I cannot really comment on them as it was my first time having them. All I can say is they were alright, freshly deep fried but we did wish there had been a bit more cheese on the inside. The spicy pineapple relish though was the second favorite thing out of everything we ordered. It was already good on its own but even more delicious as a dipping for the empanadas. It was quite spicy on the first bite and may catch you off guard, but it would grow on us. I personally also really appreciated the combo of sweet and spicy, which contradicted the grease from the empanadas.
The service was good throughout our stay and the two staff members who served us were both attentive and friendly. The coffees and food were served fairly quickly given that it was a bit busy at the time we visited. We did, however, wish there had been salt and pepper on the table as I would have loved some on my scrambled eggs. In general, it was a...
Read moreThe pros and the cons! I’m going to keep this one short as sweet rather than my usual paragraphs of reviews because there really isn’t much to say.
Service - if you want good service then don’t sit at the side of the venue because you might be forgotten (as we were! Sad face). Service issues: 1. The coffee order was forgotten, I ordered at 10.22 and it came at 10.57 only because I asked where it was, no one admitted to the mistake of missing the order and no one apologised. When the order came to the table it had the wrong milk… No one came to take our food order, after 20 minutes I asked for service and the same waiter came. He didn’t try any up-sales which I find odd because I expect you to ask me if I want to add an egg or salmon. Sometimes I change my mind last minute and it’s the best decision for me and the business. There was no service check in on how we were doing, if we were enjoying our meals, if we needed anything. The worst part is there was no accountability from the original wait person, no apology. I wanted a quick breakfast so I could go about my day, I chose this venue expecting it to take the usual time any cafe would but unfortunately it’s not what happened.
Food - The food is great, the cooks do a good job and the menu has a wide variety of options. The smashed avocado was a little bit salty for my personal preference but I would return for the food and the coffee (as it was good when I got it). I love that the menu has a wide variety of healthy foods and they have an obvious cultural background from Columbia I want to say. So there is plenty of flavour!
Socials! - A new segment for me, as a millennial reviewer, socials are key to attracting some of us. I want to see what your interpretation of your menu items look like on the IG. Unfortunately, the IG seems to have no love anymore, with old posts, no new photos of current menu items. It’s a major letdown, I definitely recommend posting and resharing more on your...
Read moreExcellent food, unique menu. Could be my top Brisbane cafe breakfast pick. In terms of the setting, north facing, accessible yet a relatively quiet side street. Subtle ambient music - appreciated, very friendly mature staff - comforting, but not overly spacious. I’d probably book if I was planning on going with any number of people. A nice bench above the sidewalk but I’d feel conscious about the room I was talking up if I was there to study at a table inside.
Two dishes I've had: Aprea con Sobrebarriga Nutritionally, probably doesn’t need the eggs, the avocado and roasted sauce (chimichurri) are already two great, heavy creamy elements. In saying that poached eggs are my favourite, and tbh seeing them in the description was likely the deciding factor in my meal choice. The beef had a lovely tenderness as you’d expect but standout was the odd crispy end that added a great additional texture. There wasn’t an overwhelming flavour but there didn’t really need to be either as the roasted sauce, avocado and aprea all chipped in. Its hard to pick a stand out because the elements were actually so well balanced and complimented each other well; but!, if I had to pick one it would be the arepa, just for how surprisingly nice it actually was and the different texture bit brought to the meal.
Petrichor's Patacon The crispy plantain was good, appreciably unique, at least to me, but probably twice as much as was necessary considering the volume of everything else on the plate. In saying that I wasn’t hard to get down and it didn’t feel like I was eating a plate of chips or anything. The freshness came from the super tender and moist chicken, avocado, sour cream and pickled jalapeños. A bit funny to eat with the size and texture of the plantain but civilised enough, the let down was just the ratio of these elements to...
