My brother Max and his smoking hot wife, Emily, took me out to dinner on Saturday to Hosokawa Japanese Restaurant. I know a lot about Japan, including what food they typically eat there, as I lived in Japan for nearly an entire week at Christmas time. Max knows lots about Japanese. Emily, although she is smoking hot, doesn't know very much about it. We had really great food here and the service was fantastic. The waitress that was looking after our table was very attentive and diligent. She ensured our dining experience was outstanding. Max and Emily both ordered drinks but I chose to stick to water with a dash of soy sauce. I was trying to keep hydrated. Earlier in the year, around mid-January when we had some very hot weather, I had multiple days in a row of getting very dehydrated. The frequent lack of hydration coupled with a low fibre diet eventuated in me experiencing bad constipation. One day attempting to birth a gargantuan log, it got stuck just before passing through my sphincter and it made me feel awful. My blood pressure was dropping and I was almost ready to call an ambulance. To avoid the embarrassment of consulting a medical professional, I decided to take action into my own hands. I found an old teaspoon with an appropriate shaped handle and used it to overcome the faecal compaction. Reflecting on the matter left me with confused feelings. I was overjoyed at clearing the faecal compaction and extremely proud at the sheer size of the log I had birthed, however this was the first time I had ever put something up there, something not to be proud of. It was a mix of joy and deep shame. It was a great evening at Hosokawa Japanese Restaurant and I would recommend it for an authentic top-notch Japanese dining experience.

When the only tempura dish on the menu was tempura potatoes with matcha salt, extra $3 for mayo. you know that someone has somehow made a terrible mistake on what used to be one of the most iconic Japanese restaurant in Brisbane. Hosakawa was a restaurant where you received an education on how Japanese food was meant to be enjoyed. Expectedly pricey, but instantly understood once you tasted the food. Warm, uncompromising, comforting, unpretentious. I recall a time during COVID when the chef refused to serve nigiri because he wasn't allowed to craft it with his bare hands. Such level of stubbornness made certain you got what you paid for. That day, we were forced to settle for their sashimi, and were delighted by the chunky, most expertly sliced and prepared sashimi that was served with delicious, freshly grated wasabi. We imitated the Japanese family next table and ordered a basket of tempura, agedashi tofu, miso to go with a few bowls of rice. Food heaven. An education every visit. Until now. Respectfully, I get that business can be challenging, and there are better margins in tempura potatoes. But this new direction (entree, main, lights, puree splatter, cocktail) just isn't for us. Enjoy your retirement the older, stubborn chef. You will be missed. I leave you with a photo of the updated menu, and let the $70 topic thunder inspired 'large' sashimi platter say the rest. (Hint: compare photo with one taken last year).

japanese food lovers!! have you tried @hosokawabne ?!🥰what a great little find in Hamilton!🥳we had a huuugeee feast here the other night!! we ordered: ✨sashimi platter for 2 ($30) ✨seared scallops ($19) ✨agedashi tofu ($15) ✨slow cooked pork belly ($15) ✨nasu dengaku- eggplant ($15) ✨grilled kingfish ($21.9) ✨chicken karaage with udon ($24) ✨whiting panko ($10) ✨wakame salad ($12.5) 🥂umeshu sour ($12- the small glass) 🥂puru momo sparking peach jelly ($10) overall, a pretty nice experience!~ top highlights were, - agedashi tofu: so so delicious we ended up ordering two! unlike other places the tofu is somewhat crispy and not soggy~ i like the difference🥰 -slow cooked pork belly: so tender and incredible broth!!! so so flavourful🤩🤤 -puru momo: oh my goodness what a beautiful drink!! 🤍✨there’s jelly inside and it is so refreshing and delicious!! i would say some dishes such as the grilled kingfish, wakame salad and eggplant were a little underwhelming there were only two small pieces of the kingfish and for such a high price i wouldn’t get it again~ wakame salad, we thought there was so dressing at all, but turns out it’s at the bottom for some reason, with such a small bowl, tossing it was a mess🥲eggplant used to be different when we came a while back, seems that they have changed it and it doesn’t taste as good as before🥺sashimi was alright~ not the freshest but still nice~

The service has deteriorated, total disorganised to a new level and appalling!

I have been a regular customer in the past but after today’s treatment , you have lost a customer and I will spend the time writing this review by letting your frequent customers know how disorganise the service has become.

I decided to have a nice meal with the family and upon shown our sitting, it took way too long for someone to take the order. No one is ever outside the sitting area and every waitress and waiter seem to be busy inside doing anything by serving their customers.

That can be forgiven, as they could be busy taking bookings or serving the cash machine.

We proceed to make our order after finally getting the attention of one of the waitress.

3 appetiser , 2 snacks plates and 2 main dish were ordered.

1 appetiser and 1 main dish failed to show up at all after nearly an hour. I then proceed to check with the waitress whom I ordered from who seems very confused of the lost orders and asked when did I ordered it. I explained that it was all orders at the same time and told her to please cancel it if is hasn’t been made, it’s getting very late and we have to rush. She said she will check and get back to me.

I waited another 15 mins and proceed to check with her again where are the dishes ... to my astonishment, she said she told “someone” to cancel the order and she did not have the courtesy to even inform me. What a pathetic service I have received from an establishment that I frequent.

To my disgust, i unhappily paid for it and I am told “they” lost my order at the counter. What kind of excuse is this seeing you are using an electronic ordering system and your waitress double check the orders before proceeding. Your waiter at the cash machine was was very quick to take the money and hurrying me out.

As I live far away from your establishment and driving a fair distance to have a nice meal , I will save my effort and time for elsewhere ! Thank you for letting ume know that this is how you treat your customers.

This unpleasant experience with Hokosawa after being a frequent patron for 6 years has left an extremely bitter experience that surely won’t...

I would love to update this review to 5 star again if Hosokawa goes back to be as amazing as it was. I have been there about 10 times in the past and have not been back here for a long time until today. I am a bit surprised that the menu has changed so much. No more Nigiri, no more salad, no more tempura udon, no more real sushi (I meant the real ones not the rolls, all real Japanese knows that sushi rolls are not real sushi). The food still tastes ok but it feels so cheap and overpriced, it is like I can order it from any take away Japanese restaurant, not the reputational Hosokawa that I came to love. The menu is boring and unimaginative. The baked eggplant is completely different from the display to the taste. Before it was cut in half and I can scoop it out with a spoon and It was so beautiful flavoured. Now it was cut into small pieces and too sweet, I feel like I am eating brown sugar cubes. The chef there is not Japanese. After learning that the owner is away at the moment, I wondered if that was the reason why the food quality went downhill. I mean for a person who didn't know much about how Hosokawa was like, they probably think it is good but for people who have been there for many years like us, we are very disappointed with the changes in the menu. It is completely cheapened and becomes unsophisticated. Hosokawa is now an overpriced take away Japanese restaurant. Until they go back to the old menu, I don't think I want to go back anymore. The only plus point is the staff is nice...
