This cafe is okay and probably one of the better options in the area, but it feels like it’s falling short of its potential.
In my view as a regular there are a few things holding it back: Staff treatment and atmosphere: The vibe is a bit off. The staff, mostly young, often seem downcast and tense. It seems like a more positive and supportive environment would make a big difference. Pricing and product quality: Prices are very high. I bought a take-home panna cotta for $15. It was nice, but that’s a lot for a single serve. I also had a caramel tart that was definitely Nestlé Top ’n Fill caramel. That’s not a dealbreaker, but if you're charging premium prices, I’d expect it to be homemade. Also, they store their eggs in a fridge in the dining area, and unfortunately they’re caged eggs. For the price, I’d expect at least cage-free, ideally free-range. Menu suggestion: It would be great to see a chicken burger on the menu. It feels like an obvious gap and would definitely be a welcome addition.
All in all, the cafe has promise and does a few things well. It’s a great location and space. With improvements around staff wellbeing, ethical sourcing, and value for money, it could be a much nicer place to visit.
ETA: Thanks for your response, although very obviously ChatGPT written I still appreciate it. I should have been clear I have no issues with the young staff - they are lovely and provide great service. The issue is the way they are treated/spoken to and the fact that they do not appear to want to be there. In regards to the pricing, like I already said, I could understand if it was top notch ingredients but displaying caged eggs in your fridges suggests that isn’t the case. I genuinely wish you all the best. I hope you can reflect and take these suggestions on board. They are offered in good faith, and like I said, I really believe in the potential...
Read moreI got severe food poisoning from eating here on the 27th of February, I got extremely violently ill the next day on the 28th, the following day after that I ended up in hospital very sick and was diagnosed with in fact food poisoning that mostly came from bacon consumed at this cafe. My partner also took 2/3 bites out of my food and was sick all of the next day. The hospital visit was followed by many doctors appointments and hospital trips, as well as an emergency endoscopy. I have since lost 12kgs and still 4 months later am so sick and can not eat and now am paying thousands of dollars for further testing and treatment because of the extreme bad bacteria over growing in my gut, not to mention having to see an ENT and spend hundreds there because I suddenly now have silent reflux and throat issues directly due to the food poisoning. (Note, none of this was ever an issues for me ever in my life prior to this). When I privately then messaged the owners of the cafe I got no response and in a previous review I left, they responded and blamed my celiac disease… but I told them I was celiac and I am also and have always been a mildly symptomatic celiac I don’t get symptoms when I get gluten anyways. They also blamed my eating disorder as I told them iv only just started eating again and this was one of my first times going back out and eating these things and I hadn’t eaten in ages because of a fear of food and disordered eating. I also have a nervous system issues which they tried to blame as well. They took no accountability at all which is why I’m retrying my review. I thought the food that day was just gross so didn’t eat it all but turns it was actually just off, stored wrong or cooked wrong. Cheesecake also was gross and had chunks or gelatine? I don’t leave bad reviews but the response was...
Read moreThe Witchin kitchen – Review:
Hubby and I met up with friends for a pre-Christmas lunch here. Our lady friend (the artist) is a vegan, so this was a great venue for us. The Kitchen is in an old corner store, and has a coffee place attached. Love the décor, the tiles, and the coloured-glass highset windows. Our friends had a vego/vegan pie each, with a smear of a spicy, orange purée – pumpkin maybe, or sweet potato? Tasty anyway. Hubby ate sweet potato, carrot and corn fritters, with eggs, labneh and salad. They were golden-brown and crispy on the outside, and moist on the inside. The eggs were well-cooked, with runny insides – as they should be. Salad was very green and leafy; a healthy little side. We shared fries with aioli, which went down a treat. I chose Bug’s Brekkie Burger – fried eggs, hash brown, halloumi, avocado, leaves and beetroot hollandaise (a fabulous shade of pink!) on a brioche bun. Oddly, I only got one egg, not the two on the menu, but no matter, I really loved this tasty and filling dish. Soft avocado, a bright pink hollandaise, a beautifully done egg with a runny middle, not too many leaves on a not too sweet bun. He had a strawberry milkshake, while I drank a chocolate one. Very filling! All up, a very pleasant lunch in a pleasant spot. Service (as per usual these days) is perfunctory, with DIY ordering at the counter. It has become ubiquitous, so I guess I can’t blame...
