We visited Fishheads on our last day in Byron Bay on the 16th June.
If you're after seafood in Byron Bay, this would be the place to come.
The atmosphere is great, not only being meters from the beach, but the interior decor is comparable to the Drunken Admiral restaurant in Hobart. It showcases its coastal theme with plenty of marine items, including a hanging boat.
Customer service was friendly, and as expected, from a european backpacker. But as I say, if they are naturally friendly and well trained, hire them!
While some reviews on Googlemaps can have 3 stars or less. Normally, we would only visit venues with 4.0 stars and above, we felt this 3.9 star venue deserved a chance, especially due to its prominent location.
To the Chef's and customers ordering; the food was great and flavoursome!
The whole fish was huge and very tasty. The mussels in the creamy broth were to die for and quite possibly not the healthiest option, but we couldn't stop scooping the sauce.
The seafood linguini and mixed grill platter were also very nice.
The Salt & Pepper Squid texture and heat was perfect, except we felt the sweet chilli sauce it was swimming in was not good presentation nor was it nessesary, perhaps a different side sauce with some simple decorative parsley would suffice.
Definitely try this place out if you're in Byron Bay and after seafood.
Warning for customers: Order to your tastebuds. However, avoid ordering too many deep-fried dishes, as this can ruin your experience at your own fault. Some dishes may be bigger than expected, so avoid over ordering to start 3. Definitely book in advance to save disappointment. When booking ahead, check the weather conditions and book accordingly and to...
Read moreI am writing this review still dreaming about the meal I had at Fishheads. This wasn't just a dinner; it was a fantastic all-around experience.
We arrived without a booking on a busy night, fully expecting a long wait. To our amazement, the staff didn't just squeeze us in—they went above and beyond. They actually separated two connected tables to create a perfect, dedicated spot for us with a brilliant view. That level of attentive, kind service is so rare and set the tone for the entire evening.
Now, for the food... WOW.
I ordered the Mixed Seafood Grill and it was an absolute masterpiece. Everything was cooked to perfection—incredibly fresh, beautifully seasoned, and grilled with expert skill. The seafood chowder was equally divine; rich, creamy, and packed with generous chunks of fresh seafood. It was pure comfort in a bowl.
The quality of the ingredients and the skill in the kitchen is evident in every single bite. It is worth every single dollar and then some.
Thank you to the wonderful team at Fishheads for your incredible hospitality and for serving what was genuinely one of the best seafood meals I've ever had. We cannot wait...
Read moreA seafood loving family visiting from interstate and saw that Fishheads came highly recommended so we thought to give it a go. Was unfortunately very disappointed by what we got for $150 (Seafood Platter for 4).
Moreton bay bugs - Not fresh and had a strange taste. Also some meat was missing from some. Calamari - Cooked well but very salty. Mussels - mussel meat was not fresh and had a strange taste. However, the chilli sauce was tasty. Fish of the day - So salty that it was inedible. Grilled prawns - The best part of the platter. Cooked and seasoned well. Salmon - The most disappointing part of the platter. They said salmon fillets (as in plural) on the menu but you only get ONE small square of salmon (approx. 7cm x 5cm) to share among 4 people! I returned to the shop when they forgot our cooked prawns and oysters to also let them know that we only got one small square of salmon and the response was that it was deliberate. Oysters - Not fresh, spawning, smallest oysters I’ve ever had. Cooked prawns - Fresh and tasty. Chips - Freshly cooked but very very salty.
Overall, was super disappointed with the platter. Would...
