Not sure about this place. Waitress told me to pick a seat, I just pick a stool in front of the window, as I didn't see any other table available. Maybe she should mention it was a second room on the second floor with tables you are not able to see from entry. She abandon me, so after 5+plus minutes of waiting, I decide to be proactive and approch to counter to order (venue was bussy. But not enought to abandon a costumer). I seat in front of the window, but sun make it difficult so move to 2nd floor (a sun screen film need to be installed on front window, otherwise, you are loosing that space on mornings). The signature dish was not as amazing as I was expecting. Toaster broke so I receive two slides of sourdough cold with no melted butter (the bread was keep on the fridge). The plate was huge but the presentation really straight foward. Chef, remember! 1/3 of the experience is visual. I was curious about the miso mushrooms, were indeed a nice add. Salt and pepper missing on table. Not sauce offered. Cappucino was good quality, but for the prices I will expect better presentation on the venue and dishes. I miss the little complementary mashmellow on side (in my way in I saw a jar full of them). The only table available in second floor give me a not welcoming view of a empty second kitchen (staff keep that door open, no idea why). If they put money to have a marzocco coffee machine, please, spend time and little bit money to improve the glassware and coffee mug (not nice to go to the best rate caffee place in town and receive a cappu in a woolworths cup). Maybe try with the op-shops, for sure different cool coffee mug will elevate the vibe of the place. In the meanwhile, give some spray paint to the staff to fill that empty hugly door with any crazy colorfull draw. Kuddos to the restroom decor. I will give a...
Read moreThe Laneway Cafe is one of the best cafes in Devonport. The small, hole-in-the-wall joint offers some delicious brunch foods and absolutely incredible drinks and milkshakes. The eggs benedict I had was hot, fresh, and perfectly cooked.
I was led to the Laneway on a date with my partner, who claimed that the milkshakes were revolutionary. I found it hard to disagree - the milkshakes are served ice cold with fresh ingredients and seemingly a touch of malt or vanilla. If you've ever watched Pulp Fiction, recall the "five dollar milkshake" scene. That about sums it up.
The service is wonderful. Even at busy times, you're certain to be fretted over by the kind waitstaff. At no time did I, as a queer person on a date with another queer person, feel uncomfortable or worried.
The cafe has some decor issues - especially upstairs. While the cafe is perfectly cleanly and sanitary, it's not exactly pretty. There are lots of unfinished or tarnished walls, and rough or uneven flooring. The furniture is comfortable but seems old. While this may be "rustic," it's a little too rustic for my personal taste.
Overall, the Laneway Cafe is an incredible spot for a casual date or quick coffee and brunch. The food is delicious and the drinks even more so. The service is great and despite business at peak hours, service is always timely. If you don't mind a little rusticism, I absolutely recommend this...
Read moreThis is a beacon or an outpost of Melbourne coffee culture in Tasmania. The cafe is tucked away on Rooke Lane, a one-way laneway off Steele Street. They are open seven days a week - 6:30am to 3:00pm (including lucky for us public holidays) though the kitchen closes at 2:00pm.
The interior is a mix of grungy industrial and vintage boho, with white painted cinder blocks and exposed brick walls together with 1950s chairs and tables.
Their coffee is a Rainforest Alliance certified Brazilian and Central American blend, though they also serve an Ethiopian single origin on request. They have a variety of teas and a wicked spicy hot chocolate. They are licenced so they can serve you a selection of beers, ciders and wines - was a bit early in the day for us to start hitting the booze but nice to know the choice was there if we needed it.
We ate there twice on our recent trip to Tasmania and I can safely say it is the best place to get breakfast in Devonport. The menu offers up a variety of different breakfast options focussing on fresh local produce. Both times we had no difficulty securing a table and found that there were no delays in the service.
I can see why the Laneway is rated so highly by its customers -...
