I recently moved to Devonport from Sydney, so was happy to find a Chinese Restaurant, I stopped there at around 12pm today, I looked at their take away menu decided on Honey Chicken and Prawn Chow Mein. Imagine my surprise when I arrived home with my food, the chow mein which I always thought was noodles, had no noodles, in fact the container ($22.50) had a very strange tasteless sauce, it appeared to me that the vegetables such as the broccoli had been washed in some kind of disinfectant, i spat it out, too scared to eat it, there were quite a few prawns, along with sliced carrots, cauliflower. I had the feeling the vegetables had been warmed up separately and then mixed with this transparent tasteless sauce.

The honey chicken was not honey chicken as i know it. A paper packet with what was very salty chicken pieces in a batter. In a separate container there was this reddish sauce. Was not sweet, in fact i dipped my finger in and tasted it before emptying the container onto my chicken, i am pleased i did as i could not identify the taste, perhaps the transparent tasteless sauce that was my chow mein dish with some colouring in it.

I cannot begin to sxpress my disappointment at what was dished up for me from this restaurant. There were a few diners in the restaurant and its possible they chose their food from the self service counter, this did look more appetizing as well as cheaper. The fried rice i got was okey, the whole meal cost me over $40 and i have a good mind to return this food to them in the morning, because i have no intention of eating it. Unfortunately tomorrow i am going to Launceston otherwise I would. What a complete waste of money. Perhaps the non chinese lady who served me was left alone in the kitchen with no clue how to cook and just went to the refrigerator with previous days left overs. I have given 1 star for the...

Would give 0 stars if I could simply for the poor customer service and rudeness after trying to give constructive feedback. Have tried to interact with the business privately about our disappointment tonight both in store and furthermore in private message because two members of our family have been ill after dining tonight. We were basically told we are wrong, and our children were also targeted about touching the chairs and then having her hands in her mouth which could have resulted in her eating something she shouldn’t without noticing????? Concerning for the level of cleanliness in the restaurant if touching a chair before eating is causing food poising like symptoms. Another excuse we were told was that our daughter was caught by the waitress picking her nose and eating it, insinuating this was the reason for her being sick. I am a grown adult who certainly doesn’t pick my nose and eat it but I am presenting with the same symptoms. I think it may have more to do with the soggy, rubbery chicken that was cold in the centre that we had asked to be rectified, and suspect it was only microwave reheated. So disappointing and belittling to try and target children after negative feedback. Unprofessional and would never dine here again or recommend it simple due to the way this situation...

Well, well, well, if it isn't the anime character come to life serving up some classic Chinese takeout! I must say, the food at this establishment is exceptional - in fact, it's so good that I almost forgot about the subpar service I received from our server. But who needs good service when you have delicious food, am I right?

And let me tell you, the fried rice was something else. It was like a culinary masterpiece straight out of an anime. I half expected the rice to start performing some sort of magical transformation right before my eyes. It was that good.

Sure, our server may have been more concerned with batting her eyelashes and playing with her hair than actually taking our order, but who cares when the food is this good? I mean, I'm not saying that the server's looks compensated for her lack of attention to our needs, but it definitely didn't hurt the overall experience.

So if you're looking for some exceptional Chinese takeout and don't mind a bit of subpar service from an anime character come to life, then this is the place for you. And if you're an anime lover like me, be sure to try the fried rice - it's a culinary adventure you won't...

Well, I was hesitant about accepting a lunch date with friends here, they are locals and said they always have a great meal here. I read the reviews first and was cautious. My wife, mother in-law, another couple and myself had, Mongolian beef, vegetable omelette and a prawn combination with fried rice. My beef came out very quickly, and it was still sizzling hot, and was very tender and tasty loved it and would order it again. My wife's vegetable omelette was great as well but was too big, as picture shows, so the remainder came home, but she loved it. Desserts were great as well. I'm going to try and pick on something, as I said, read reviews before going in, so I was checking the floor, the cutlery, tables, chairs, staff. Maybe they had a busy night, party maybe, but it was clean and tidy for us. The two young staff members were casual, but very polite, one was only new and didn't remember one of the meals they placed on the table, but apologized for forgetting it. So we'll go back, maybe we were lucky, but just giving our honest experience. 👍🥣

Came all the way from Sydney based on personal recommendations, and it was well worth the trip. It’s a classic Chinese takeaway restaurant with a modern twist. Beyond the tried-and-true favourites, there are standout dishes like the mapo tofu and chili chicken that play on bold, contemporary Chinese flavours. The space captures the nostalgic charm of an early-2000s Chinese takeaway — simple, familiar, and comforting — yet it’s executed with impressive attention to detail and genuine value. Every dish felt thoughtfully made, with fresh ingredients and balanced flavours that never felt heavy. You can tell the team cares about getting both taste and presentation just right. A great mix of comfort, nostalgia, and a few pleasant surprises — definitely worth a visit (or detour) for anyone who loves good Chinese food.

Finally visited China Garden Restaurant in Devonport! Came all the way from Singapore just to try their dishes, and it was absolutely worth it. Dinner started with the fried quail — juicy, tender, and perfectly seasoned. We also tried the owner’s homemade fried wontons and fresh wonton soup, both filled with flavourful minced pork. For the main dishes, we had Hong Kong sizzling beef, Mongolian lamb, roast duck, and an authentic chilli chicken — each bursting with aroma and taste. The vegetable fried rice and Singapore noodles had great wok hei (flavour from the wok) and rounded off the meal beautifully. Dessert was fun and nostalgic — fried ice cream and chocolate spring rolls. Overall, a truly lovely meal — hearty, home-style cooking that’s full of heart.
