A handy place to catch a bite in the old East Bloch Building, adjacent to the National Archives of Australia offices and exhibition space. On first entry it appears that there are few food options available in the heated counter beside the coffee machine and cluttered cash register space. After ordering a couple of pies and coffee for lunch we took our number and sat down. Then we saw some an anonymous basket that appeared to hold some menus. Indeed this was the case and there is solid range of menu options that supplement the pies and sausage rolls in the warmer. Sadly the person serving did not check on the availability of the items ordered, so we only had one steak and mushroom pie to accompany the fairly ordinary coffee. Had to make do with a sausage roll that was just a sausage roll.
Cafe Constitution could be so much more. If we go again, we will k ow where to find the menus, unless they are placed in a more obvious location for visiting public. Be advised that the kitchen closes at 2.00pm, probably an artifact of the venue being mainly a staff cafeteria and not a destination...
Read moreThis cafe catered an event I attended at the National Archives and I was so impressed I decided to try lunch.
A large menu made choices difficult, we'll have to come back to try some of their other options.
We had three different dishes, chicken burger, steak sandwich and a bruscetta. All were tasty and the potato chips served on the sides were quite tasty!
The bruscetta was the smallest of the three meals but that was expected, so no issue there - it made for a light lunch which was what was wanted.
Coffee, milkshake and a strawberry shakes were the drinks of the day, and all were very good, but IMHO, the strawberry shake was the best.
Service was excellent, meals were delivered quickly and plates removed when it was clear we had finished.
Overall ambience is nice and friendly, you can even help out with a jigsaw.

Read moreReally cosy cafe to sit for a coffee, breakfast or lunch. The coffee lady is super friendly, but the lady who took our order at the counter was a bit blunt (couldn’t give us a smile). We ordered two pies and they were alright, but not amazing. Definitely had way better some place else. The coffee was good though! Once we got our food, another man walked in and asked to order a pie. He got the answer that the chef already left and they had turned off the heaters a while ago. It wasn’t even 2 o’clock… it might be me, but I don’t understand what the big effort is of heating up a pie for a couple of...
