The pros: very generous portion, my husband and I got a sandwich each, but only managed to eat half each, so you can definitely eat one sandwich between two unless you're very very hungry. Food was fresh and it tasted good.
Why I did 4 stars not 5: I wouldn't rave about it, but maybe I expected too much because of they hype. We got the proscuitto and it was yummy, but very salty, there's salty seasoning on the bread, the proscuitto is salty, the cheese is sharp, and the balsamic vinegar is again a sharp taste which all culminated in a rather salty sandwich that even if I was hungry enough, I don't think I could finish because of it. It is also a very small but busy place, so prepare for a little bit of a wait, especially for a place to sit if you plan on eating there. Seating is a free for all, and not really monitored by staff so you may need to be assertive if you want to secure a table with chairs, and keep them.
I'll happily go back again and try something else to get a better idea...
Read moreI recently visited Caffè al Lago in Gungahlin, and I have to say—it’s easily one of my new favorite spots in Canberra. Nestled right by Yerrabi Pond, the view alone is worth the visit. But what really makes this place special is the food.
They specialize in Italian sandwiches, and you can absolutely taste the love and quality in every bite. I tried the Pistachio Mortadella with stracciatella and pesto—completely blew me away. The bread is freshly baked in-house (you can smell it as you walk in!), and every ingredient is top-notch. It’s clear the owners really care about bringing a little piece of Tuscany to Canberra.
The vibe is relaxed and friendly, and the ONA coffee pairs perfectly with the food. It’s not the cheapest lunch option, but it’s definitely worth every cent for the flavor and quality you’re getting.
Highly recommend if you’re in the area—or even if you’re not. It’s one of those places that’s...
