The pros: very generous portion, my husband and I got a sandwich each, but only managed to eat half each, so you can definitely eat one sandwich between two unless you're very very hungry. Food was fresh and it tasted good.

Why I did 4 stars not 5: I wouldn't rave about it, but maybe I expected too much because of they hype. We got the proscuitto and it was yummy, but very salty, there's salty seasoning on the bread, the proscuitto is salty, the cheese is sharp, and the balsamic vinegar is again a sharp taste which all culminated in a rather salty sandwich that even if I was hungry enough, I don't think I could finish because of it. It is also a very small but busy place, so prepare for a little bit of a wait, especially for a place to sit if you plan on eating there. Seating is a free for all, and not really monitored by staff so you may need to be assertive if you want to secure a table with chairs, and keep them.

I'll happily go back again and try something else to get a better idea...

I recently visited Caffè al Lago in Gungahlin, and I have to say—it’s easily one of my new favorite spots in Canberra. Nestled right by Yerrabi Pond, the view alone is worth the visit. But what really makes this place special is the food.

They specialize in Italian sandwiches, and you can absolutely taste the love and quality in every bite. I tried the Pistachio Mortadella with stracciatella and pesto—completely blew me away. The bread is freshly baked in-house (you can smell it as you walk in!), and every ingredient is top-notch. It’s clear the owners really care about bringing a little piece of Tuscany to Canberra.

The vibe is relaxed and friendly, and the ONA coffee pairs perfectly with the food. It’s not the cheapest lunch option, but it’s definitely worth every cent for the flavor and quality you’re getting.

Highly recommend if you’re in the area—or even if you’re not. It’s one of those places that’s...

Caffè al Lago is hands down one of the best cafes in Gungahlin! From the moment you step in, you're greeted by a cozy, inviting atmosphere that makes you feel right at home. The coffee? Absolutely perfect! Rich, smooth, and full of flavour – it’s clear they use high-quality beans and know exactly how to brew them to perfection. Whether you’re a flat white fan or a classic espresso lover, they’ve got it all, and it’s always top-notch.

As for the food, it’s nothing short of amazing. The menu offers a fantastic variety of fresh, mouthwatering sandwiches, each prepared with care and attention to detail. It is a must-try! Every bite bursts with flavour, and the ingredients are so fresh.

The staff are friendly and attentive, making every visit feel personal and special, whether you’re popping in for a quick coffee or enjoying a leisurely meal.

Highly recommend this gem to anyone in the area or just...

Visit this morning with a friend and we ordered LA SPECIALE and LA PROSCIUTTO sandwiches. The taste was great, however the bread was too hard that it peels the roof of my mouth and hers too. Also, I noticed other customers had their sandwich cut in half but they did not ask us at the counter if we wanted ours cut which is preferable due to the size of the sandwich. On the other hand, they sell ONA coffee, my favourite, but the size of the mug is too small for the price of a large coffee I paid. The service in general was not good, we asked for trays for our sandwiches and the waitress just gave us only one. Again the sizes of sandwich are big so no point to have only one tray for 2 sandwiches. Plus, there was a waiter cleaning the dust on a surface right next to us when we were eating, clearly no common sense in how to act when customers are around.

Caffe al Lago is a true treasure in Canberra, offering an unbeatable combination of delicious food, exceptional coffee, and breathtaking views of the lake. Their Italian sandwiches are hands down the best I’ve ever had! The bread is perfectly crunchy on the outside while staying wonderfully soft on the inside, and the flavors are absolutely divine. Each bite feels like a little piece of Italy. The ONA coffee here is exceptional as well – smooth, rich, and expertly brewed every single time. It’s a true testament to their dedication to quality. On top of that, the customer service is outstanding. The staff are friendly, attentive, and genuinely care about ensuring you have a great experience. Caffe al Lago is a must-visit for anyone in Canberra. Amazing food, great coffee, fantastic service, and breathtaking views. Definitely i will come back!!

I decided to take myself on a date to try out Caffe Al Lago on Yerrabi Pond in Gungahlin. I got the "Pistachio Mortadelle" and a can of coke Zero for $22.80. The sandwich consists of Mortadella, Stracciatella, Basil Pesto, Rocket, Pistachios and Extra Virgin Olive Oil. The bread is cooked fresh at the restaurant and is perfectly charred and crispy. You could eat it on its own and enjoy it. In fact the whole thing was just perfectly balanced flavour wise with every bite getting a bit of everything in it. Look at the generous serving of meat!!!! The only real negative was how long it took but that's because they are super busy. I was lucky and got a table but if you don't get one, there's the lake across the road with some picnic tables to enjoy. They only serve takeaway on the weekend. Easily a 9.4 out of 10.
