The Southern Cross Club is always busy and meals are predictable. Service is generally average or poor - generally young staff who seem to not know how to do their jobs but this is fine, we all have to learn. Based on previous experiences I would give a 3 star rating. One star review is based on the comedy of errors and complete lack of customer service this evening. Tonight it was busy as usual, we were quick to order hoping our meal wouldn’t be long. Thirty minutes after arriving our drinks and food were nowhere in sight. So I went up and asked how long it would be and pointed out we had not received our drinks after a 30 minute wait. The waitress logged onto the computer, looked quite panicked, said she would check, went to another staff member who came back and said, “the ticket for your order didn’t print at the kitchen.” Yet neither of them went to the kitchen and they couldn’t find our order in the system when I asked so they started ruffling through paper order books. Clearly our order was not entered into the system. They took our order a second time and said they would take it straight to the kitchen. I asked how long it would be and asked if there would be some kind of discount offered (it should have been offered upfront, poor service that I had to suggest it). It was suggested our drinks would be free (2 glasses of wine, a lite beer and 2 soft drinks). I said I expected more than that and asked that they engage their manager. It took ten more minutes for the drinks to arrive. Fifty minutes after ordering we received our meals for which we paid full price. The burger and chips didn’t have any sauce and it took five minutes for the sauce to arrive after we went up and asked for it (by this point I was timing everything). I’m really disappointed that we weren’t offered better compensation for their fault. And that the staff didn’t bother to engage their management when I requested a discount other than free drinks. I would also expect a bit more attention after that kind of error such as bringing a new water jug over or checking that we were ok, We saw multiple tables who were seated after us receive their food well before us. The error was clearly that our order was not entered into the system. A little bit of customer service would have gone a long way. Food was average but predictable....
Read moreClub looks amazing after renovations, my family and i were excited to attend and enjoy a meal. We ordered 2 herb and garlic breads, 2 kids meals (free with adult meals), a surf and turf and a club special lamb kofta burger. Totalling $104 and due to my new club card not activating in time to purchase meals i needed to pay non-member price. Surf and turf ordered medium rare was cooked medium to well, prawns were chargrilled on top with no sauce to accommodate them making the meal extremely dry. Sauce accommodating the meal was to small for the sides and the steak pushing for you to order extras on top of the purchase. Lamb kofta burger, kofta tasted burnt and lack of dressing made it also dry although the flavours were delightful. Kids meals were reasonable sizing but slightly lacking in flavour but impressed with the range of options. Henrys kids room had soft climbing areas and kids gaming machines at an average price of $2, although just under 50% of games were out of order. Similar style as kingpin as mixed dining areas, pool tables and games.
Over all it seemed an expensive trip to be made for a family at the night totalling at $136 for only 2x H&G breads, 2x mains, $22 in drinks and $10 games. Paying for kids meals would push it closer too $158 and for the value of food quality over other similar priced resturants i sadly wouldnt recommend as you can spend the same at kingpin and get $30+ in free play credit for a higher range of game machines.
I love the concept but feel pricing is a bit steep for club style venue especially food quality and options. Must say with my visit i was sadly disappointed by meals but on a positive note the club looked so much better after the renovations and has a lot...
Read moreI recently had my birthday dinner one week ago at the Canberra Southern Cross club. It might be suitable for just a normal night out but I would not recommend it for a special occasion.
Originally when my husband made the booking, he explained that this was for a birthday dinner and for us to be seated somewhere nice. He also enquired about setting up a bar tab to which they said no problem.
When we arrived we had been placed right next to the pool tables. We could not hear ourselves think let alone speak to one another. The staff behaved as though we were being a bother. I can’t lie they were quite rude. And it took unnecessarily long to set up a simple bar tab. My aunt asked if we could be moved to the empty table next to us where we were not in danger of being hit in the head by the pool queues while a bunch of rowdy men played a game, and the noise level would be a bit less at the next table. The staff member asked why we wanted to move and upon the explanation they simply said no, because in their opinion it would not make any difference. That table remain empty for the rest of the night.
I hate being a Karen and I am normally not a confrontational person, but at this point I asked for the manager and explained the situation again, and asked to be moved a table further away which had become available. The manager I have to admit was nice and got that table cleaned and we were able to move.
The whole experience was very underwhelming and I doubt we will ever eat there again. The food was good and the manager was helpful. If it wasn’t for those two factors I would’ve given the Canberra southern crust...
