Familiarity about what was!!
For over ten years my wife and I have been visiting Esperance and this bakery. The range of cakes and pies have always looked good in the display cabinets. The cleanliness of the shop where patrons are served has also been neat and tidy.
Unfortunately as a culinary critique with extensive experience within the food industry and seeing how cost cutting measures are often employed I have observed how even this once little gem of a bakery has slowly followed suit.
As an example: The Apple fruit custard tarts used to have a thin layer of chocolate lining in the inside of the pastry shell. Filled with apple and covered with a tasty light custard filling and completely covered with a variety of fresh fruit with a dribble of clear glaze. The price for four was always well worth the spend and the indulgence. Now there is no chocolate coating so the pastry crust quickly becomes soggy. There are few small diced apples with a large amount of gelatin thickener. A wiff of custard in a very creamy filling and a sparse amount of fruit on top. The price for four now for me is not worth the expense. I’ll make them at home. Regards to the pies. Similar short cuts have occurred but with a high level of salt to boot and a need to quench ones thirst. I had tried speaking about the changes but it seems an issue with language to get any response on the...

I recently visited Esperance French Hot Bread and tried a variety of items, including a steak and cheese pie, a steak, cheese, and tomato pie, two chicken teriyaki dishes with egg fried rice, and a fruit tart.
While the service was impeccable and much appreciated, the food experience was a mixed bag. The steak and cheese pie was medium in flavor, lacking in both steak and cheese, with an overabundance of gravy. The steak, cheese, and tomato pie was even more disappointing, with a dry crust and minimal filling, mostly gravy with only a few pieces of steak and no cheese.
On a positive note, the chicken teriyaki had a nice balance of sweetness and a generous amount of chicken meat, and the fried rice was perfectly cooked. Unfortunately, the fruit tart fell short of expectations both in flavor and overall appeal.
Despite the good presentation of the items, the uneven quality leads me to give Esperance French Hot Bread an overall...
Read moreI didn't realise until we had eaten our food that I was charged an extra $5.40. I bought 1 x steak and mushroom pie 1 x curry puff 1 x vanilla slice 1x choc donut 1 bag of bread rolls plus an extra bread roll to make up to 7. Total came to $24.20. Apparenlty I was not charged for the extra bread roll but was charged for 2 loaves of sliced bread which I did not order. I was charged for the 2 loaves which another customer placed behind my purchases. Food was good but having to pay for 2 loaves of bread wasn't good. I think 1 extra bread roll would have been 70cents only but I pain an extra $4.70. Not happy Jan. I was unable to return to the shop as we had to be somewhere else...
