We'd heard good things about Angel House so booked several weeks in advance for a special occasion. It was crowded and they turned several walk-ins away while we were there so that was a smart move.
The food was good. There was nothing imaginative about the menu - Angel House offers the greatest hits to the point it all felt a bit cliché. Portions were sized for the Australian appetite which isn't necessarily a good thing when the food is so rich.
The wine list was good with both Australian and French selections.
The service was inattentive, at best. Food was quite literally slammed on the table. The menu was not explained, although since no effort was put into the menu, it probably wasn't needed. No recommendations were made. No questions asked. Cutlery was brought after the food arrived. We had to ask for drinks. They didn’t provide a glass with the beer so you’re forced to drink it out of the bottle. Bread was never offered. Pacing was uneven and felt frenetic. Our waiter would be serving us but looking at another table.
As the only French restaurant in Fremantle, it's worth a visit. If you go expecting a sophisticated dining experience, you'll be disappointed. (Angel House does not hold a candle to the defunct Great Mellie restaurant.) Having lived in Lyon, both my partner and I were looking forward to something more than offered.
Angel House is definitely worth trying. It's not a bouchon. It's not a brasserie. It's not haute cuisine. It's more like the kind of place you'd be taken if you were on a coach tour of Paris - you can tick it off your list but it's unlikely you'll...
Read moreMy wife and I went to a relatively new Angels House in Fremantle. It is run a French Chef formerly from The Pearl in Bali. We have been there numerous times previously so we were excited to try this restaurant. We had an amazing lunch in the rear courtyard on a beautiful day.
We started with tsome cocktails the French Desire and the Angel’s Punch. I found the punch delicious, the hint of almond made the drink very enjoyable. My wife found the French Desire nice but strong.
I ordered the Fremantle Octopus - a marinated local octopus, with leek vinaigrette preserved lemon and home made mayonnaise. It had great flavour and the leek was sweet so it paired well.
I also had the Cauliflower Gratin, it was so creamy and the cauliflower was perfect. Often it’s over cooked and it becomes a mushy mess but this cauliflower still had structure. Full points for flavour.
My wife had the Butternut “tartin” - it was a roasted honeyed butternut slice in a puff pastry with a blue cheese mousse with almond slivers. She found it was delicious.
For dessert we shared the Riz au Pait (creamy rice vanilla) with candied macadamias. It was divine, the after dessert photos has proof!
The service was excellent and the chef Jeremy was excellent, chatting to us about the restaurant and opening in the middle of the...
Read moreDined here while on holiday from Queensland. We both really love French cooking and Provençal style in particular but it’s hard to come by in Queensland. This place has lovely ambience which took me back to Uzes in the south of France. Run by two brothers, the team was excellent and played to their strengths, bringing a very authentic Provençal approach to the service and the food. The meals were really lovely with that magical blend of home style cooking that you just know you could never replicate in your own home because of the expertise behind the apparently simple dishes. We had the chef’s special of the day which was delightful and when I said my only regret was not having also tried the Beef Bourguignon, the owner returned with a small tasting plate which did not disappoint. The simple beef cheek was laced with subtle flavours of beef and herb and caramel. I have no idea how they do that but it’s great! It was also refreshing to have a real crème caramel as opposed to the barstardised version that is usually provided in Australian restaurants. They nailed the texture and the warmth. Wish they were based in...
