Read moreStumbled across this fancy looking Thai restaurant with a friend of mine. Looked quite flash and we were both in the mood for some good Thai food. The venue is very upmarket, beige with fancy fittings and wait staff using lapel microphones. We knew we’d be in for a pricey menu given the fit out but were happy to indulge provided the food was as a good a quality as the restaurant appearance. The drinks menu was amazing - long list of reasonably priced cocktails and great mocktails as well. Very impressive and plenty of theatre with their presentation. Tbh maybe too much going on with cocktails which were served at a “steady” pace by the two very busy bar men creating their theatric concoctions. When it got to ordering the food we were a little excited (and a little bewildered) about the unusual but tantalizing variations in a normal Thai menu. We ordered - pork skewers and beef skewers to start which came with a fish/ sesame/ garlic dipping sauce - it was supposed to be a Thai relish. The garlic had been fried to very crispy - too crispy it felt like chunks of sand in your mouth. The meat on the skewers was very chewy unfortunately but the pork had a really nice flavor. Then we ordered the soft shell crab with tempura betel leaf and turmeric curry that had a touch of spanner crab, kale and for some reason a touch of gold leaf 🤔. I mean ok it is the Gold Coast I guess. The curry was more like a coconut gravy, I get that as a turmeric curry it isn’t a traditional Thai flavor but I was pretty underwhelmed. It just didn’t have any depth of flavor and the kale in the curry was so chewy it was inedible- I actually had to discreetly put it back onto my spoon and hide it under the napkin. I just couldn’t swallow it no matter how much I chewed.
Overall we were very underwhelmed but are determined to go back and try again with some more traditional dishes and see what we think. The owners and chef are clearly trying really hard to make it a different Thai experience that’s a bit more upmarket but the food has to be good above all else. I’ll go to corner thai restaurant with plastic chairs and tables with good food before I’ll go to a fancy one with fancy cocktails and unusual menu items. Sorry team but it just didn’t rate very well on...

Had a really nice meal at Limlay Thai! The restaurant has a stylish tropical vibe, and the location is perfect—just across the road from the beach, making it a great spot for a meal before or after a seaside walk.
We were a group of four adults and one child, and the staff were very friendly. They provided a highchair and kids’ utensils without us even asking, and at the end of the meal, they gave a small gift to the little one, which was a really thoughtful touch.
The food was well-prepared and nicely presented:
🍍 Pineapple Fried Rice – Served in a pineapple, it had a good balance of flavors with shrimp, cashews, and a hint of sweetness from the pineapple.
🍲 Tom Yum Hotpot – The presentation reminded us of a Korean army stew, but the taste was classic Thai. The broth was flavorful with a nice balance of tangy and spicy, and it came with plenty of seafood.
🍜 Pad Thai – Well-cooked noodles with just the right amount of seasoning. It was a popular dish at our table and finished quickly.
🥩 Wagyu Beef Skewers – Nicely grilled, tender, and flavorful.
🥭 Mango Sticky Rice – The sticky rice was soft, and the coconut milk added a nice creaminess. The mango was fresh and sweet, making it a good way to end the meal.
We also ordered Thai Iced Tea, which was a bit sweet for our taste, so if you prefer less sugar, you might want to ask them to adjust it.
Overall, it was a great dining experience with good food, friendly service, and a convenient location near the beach. Would recommend if you’re looking for a nice Thai meal...
