What a find!! I trusted the google reviews for a cafe close to a specific location I needed to get to and we were not disappointed! After walking 15 min from Hobart port up Elizabeth Mall early Sunday morning the streets were quiet. When we turned onto Bathurst St we found the markets setting up. We walked past all of the stalls to the section beyond where everything looked closed again. We spied the unmistakable poses of takeaway coffee customers and carried on in hope that it wasn’t a queue! We were rewarded with Ed’s Spuntino Cafe & Bar (Spuntino meaning snack bar) - a compact, vibrant and unique establishment where locals are treated like family and visitors to the city are adopted quickly. From our 2 seats of the 10 seats at the bar we enjoyed watching the transparent creation of honest, fresh meals prepared in front of us by the Chef and his team of two. They worked like a well oiled machine, each knowing their roles and respectfully communicating with each other in the process of delivering classic, quality customer service and quality, good value meals. The coffee (small FW, full cream milk & large FW, oat milk) were the BEST WE EXPERIENCED ON OUR TASMANIAN TOUR! What more can I say? On our departure our seats were quickly snapped up by the eager locals who had skirted the many bustling stalls at the markets to immerse themselves in the experience that is Ed’s...

Stumbled in at Ed’s following a breakfast recommendation from a local bakery. What a lovely surprise!

Pete (Ed’s dad) was cooking and what a cook he is. We had the best mushroom omelette of my life, accompanied by some excellent sightseeing recommendations and all the while, he was mixing and creating fresh dishes for the rest of the day.

I was so enthralled by his recipes and seeing him create, that I simply had to return that same day for lunch to enjoy his freshly made pasta and meatballs - chefs kiss!

I wish I had more time to sample everything on the menu, but so far I can highly recommend the meatballs and tiramisu with some Italian wine. You won’t be short on good conversation either, as Pete is happy to have a chat while he works away.

Larissa makes a very good coffee too and from the friendly faces that popped in while we were seated, you can tell it’s a neighbourhood favourite. Will definitely be returning to this delightful...

Great gem in Hobart! Ed and his dad/chef Pete have created a cozy Italian joint where you feel like you’re having a family meal at the kitchen bench.

The food here is great and the coffee is fantastic too. We usually don’t ever go to the same place twice for food on holiday and after we had breakfast at Ed’s we had to go back later in the weekend for lunch - it was that good.

Breakfast has some great staples - like their rosti…you actually watch Pete freshly grate the potato for your breakfast! The corn fritters are also great.

Lunch comes with house made focaccia and you can choose from a selection of pasta dishes with the noodles made fresh in front of you. Great wine on offer as well. We also saw the minestrone soup and carbonara being served to others which looked amazing.

Wish we got a photo of the carrot cake muffins with cream cheese frosting - was the best carrot cake we’ve had!

We’ll be...

Without doubt the best cafe in Hobart. Ed's started up in early 2020, right in the middle of COVID, so they had a "soft" opening. Ed and Pete, father and son run the shop, with Ed doing your drinks and Pete doing the cooking. You get to sit at their metal bench, watch Pete cook your food and enjoy the conversations that naturally take place. Pete keeps his fare simple but by god he makes simple oh so nice. Without doubt the best carrot cake I have ever tasted, and its so big I joke that they can see it from the International Space Station. The cafe itself has a very historical feel about it with stone walls. Well worth a visit but be careful on a Sunday morning because the nearby Farm Gate Markets on Bathurst St mean that Sunday's are their busiest days. Well worth a visit.
