The price to quality/quantity ratio is the worst in Hobart. You could do much better at the Japanese sushi restaurant at the other end of Salamanca. We grabbed a 6-pack nuggets at MacDonalds after spending $50 at Kosaten, and the nuggets filled us up better. The taste of the food was not bad in any sense, but it wasnât anything to shout about.
The menu is relatively small considering there were just nigiri, rolls, and sides. The selection for the said items arenât too wide, with most of the items being salmon. Kosaten tries to be a mix between a sushi restaurant and an izakaya, but doesnât really have anything over the existing sushi restaurants and izakayas in Hobart.
Service was ok, considering our bookings were made online, the food was served via a train, and the order was made via iPad. Our only human interactions were that we tried to make an earlier reservation over the phone, and I would strongly recommend doing it online instead. We were also told that we had to finish our meal by a certain time as they had another booking. Fortunately the food was fast to come out, but knowing that you could be chased out at any moment didnât help the the overall experience.
The cups were of different sizes, and soya sauce was provided, but no sauce dishes. The general ambience was cool, but not Japanese. The reviews Iâve read prior to going to try had indicated the setting is âlegitimately Japaneseâ, they clearly have no clue as to what a âlegitimate Japaneseâ restaurant looks like, and thatâs ok.
All in all, I wouldnât tell people to avoid this place, and it seems to be hitting the right notes with the locals, I just wonât be able to justify...

But the two waitresses who was on shift during 5:00-6:30 were ridiculousïŒ We ordered the dessert and asked for another spoon cos we were going to share it. This was a simple enough request u know. They never gave me what I was asking for⊠They came three times. The first time they gave me an empty plateïŒwhich I have absoutely no idea whyđ€·ââïžïŒ. The second time we rang the bell again and repeated ourselves again. At last they came back the third time and u know whatïŒthey have me a huge tea spoon instead of the dessert spoon I asked forâŠ. And those two they didnât talked to customers at all. Like even when they have water they just put it there and left. I understand itâs not a fine dining and Iâm not really expecting that level of serviceïŒbut this is ridiculous. AnywayïŒagainïŒthe food was nice. But becuase of the attitude of those staffïŒI...
Read moreKosaten is one of our favourite restaurants in Hobart and we have introduced many more devotees during our visits. The menu is extensive with many excellent, tasty and tempting dishes which are very well priced. The small serves and generally not too rich or heavy dishes allow you to share and sample many offerings during a meal, however, it's still surprising how quickly you can fill up our tip would be to so order as you go, to ensure you don't over do it! A couple of our favourite dishes to keep an eye out for are: pumpkin tofu, tempura oysters, wagu beef three ways, the pork belly and rice with dijon mustard, the matcha tiramisu and Greek yoghurt pannacotta. To drink we love the Calpis soda and have created a few converts with that one too! The girls at Kosaten are always very friendly and helpful and we live the atmosphere with the ipad ordering and...
