Meta is eating "phoenix claws" at a place that has been reborn a few times like the proverbial phoenix. I’ve skipped a few of the in between lives but did enjoy the original, and am also liking the latest iteration of 广州楼, which used to be called Big Gun Chinese Restaurant in English (when it was located at the Big Gun building), but is now Ming Chinese Restaurant. We went for yum cha, for which they have a pretty extensive menu (80 items). Ordering is done by filling out an order sheet; we had 17 different items (with some multiples), of which 7 were M, 3 L, 5 XL and 2 L. Total bill for 5 adults and 4 children (including tea charge) was $147.30 and that’s with a bit of over-ordering. I don’t particularly recommend the xlb (maybe if you’re desperate and already there for a meal) or the runny egg custard buns (distinct lack of runny ness despite them having 3 goes at it), but I was pretty happy with all the other dishes we had. Given the pricing being pretty low compared to some of the competition and the food being mostly pretty decent, I reckon this place will be my new go-to for yum cha. They also have quite a few options for non-yum cha meals so I’d also be keen to check out the rest of the menu another time. Notes: * undercover parking available under the building * yum cha item pricing is S $4, M $4.80, L $5.80, XL $6.80, G $7.80 * tea charge is $2.30 per adult and $1.80 per child for weekends/public holidays, and presumably lower on weekdays * 2% card surcharge Oh and if you didn’t know, “phoenix claw” is the Chinese name for the yum cha dish otherwise known as chicken feet 😁

Where do I even start on my review? Saw this place a couple of times when going to shinbashi yakiniku. Never tried it until this morning. Service was not so friendly. Only bring one saucer of sauce when there are 3 people. Staff are mostly elderly people with no sense of customer service. We ordered a fair bit of dimsums, which cost us around Aud100++. Portions were really huge. My detailed review on the things ordered below: 1) Char siu pau and char siu so - both fillings are the same and tasted being heat up from frozen. The char siu filling has an obvious red and artificial colouring. The char siu soh looks pale and not appealing. 2) har kau, siu mai, beancurd skin, and peanut dumplings tasted just ok. Nothing fantastic, lack of flavouring, and wasn't steamed to a good temperature. Feels a bit cold on the inside. 3) Stir-fried turnip was the best of the lot that we have ordered but not wow. 4) taro Wu kok - nice outer layer but less filling on the inside and lack of flavour. 5) pai kuat, oily, and lack of flavour. 6) The worst of the worst was the yu tiau cheong fun. Oily, flavourless, and the yu tiau is not fresh, not crispy and cold! I put it into my mouth and spit it out immediately. It was really unpleasant to eat. Again, these are my thoughts, and I'm sure everyone has different taste buds. I love my yum cha, and this is just one of the worst yum cha I ever had in Brisbane by far. I wish your restaurant all the best.

Exactly what you want in a dimsum place, but better! First thing we noticed was the service - staff were friendly and helpful. They noticed we wanted to cut and split a dish, so they came to us with scissors. Food quantity and quality was great - we ordered the classics and were impressed with all of them. And left feeling very satisfied. Price wise - for the amount of dishes we ordered (dimsums and dessert), it was very worth it. Parking - there's plenty of parking on the street and underground. Crowd - we were surprisingly able to get a table for Sunday lunch. Definitely will go back!

If there is a lower than 1-star rating, I will go with that for service. We went there for a quick dinner on a Friday evening, thought of having a Friday night relax and chill earlier. But our feeling was destroyed by the customer service, which my review is focusing on. As usual, once we (3 of us) sat down, we were given a stack of menu + some newspaper cut out with the ads for promo for some dishes, which was fine. One of the 1-page menu (red background) listed 7 or 8 types dim sum with special price of $7.80. Can't recall all of the dim sum types listed as special price of $7.80, but we ordered 1 each of 烧卖 and 凤爪 through the usual list of order chit (listed with all the dim sum available and tick boxes next to each of them), also ordered some other dishes/ foods through one of the staffs. Few mins later, one of the staffs left the tax invoice on our table (this is their standard practice) and we seen the prices for the 烧卖 and 凤爪 were stated as $10.80 and $9.80 respectively, which were not aligned with the promo price stated on the 1-pager red menu. We asked one of the staffs and the staff took the tax invoice and walked to the counter to seek for clarification. We heard the conversation at the counter with the cashier mentioning “这个特价是不一样的,这是要另外点单的,还有是现金价”。After a short moment, the cashier walked to our table and started to tell us “这些特价是要另外点单的,还有是现金价,你们点的时候没有说明要特价的,又点在这张单(PS: which is the order chit that listed with all the dim sum available and tick boxes next to each of them), 点的是普通价,不一样的”。We asked what were the differences between the normal price and special offer price 烧卖 and 凤爪, the cashier said the portion is different, i.e. for both 烧卖 and 凤爪, special price item has 3 pcs instead of 4 pcs, and we need to state clearly while placing order. And with an unhappy voice, the cashier said "没事,这次帮你改去特价“。Note: There was no intention of apologise for the misunderstanding or miscommunication at all, and clearly the blame was on us in creating all these inconvenience to them. We were unhappy with the cashier explanation as we felt that the cashier put the blame on us for not stating clearly what we wanted when we placed the order. Worth to note here that there is neither big print nor fine print on the 1-pager red menu that describe the differences between the special price and normal price item (i.e. nothing about 3 pcs vs. 4 pcs.), no foot note or ** or instruction on how to place order (e.g. need to specify to the staff, etc). This is clearly no communication was given to us when the whole stack of menu was given to us when we sat down, this miscommunication could have been resolved if the staff told us when putting down the stack of menu by telling us all the "terms and conditions" in order to entitle (not enjoy) the special price. We are ok and respect if there are terms and conditions applied for all the special promo or price items, but it's not acceptable to have all these terms and conditions hidden, not communicated to us and charged us the normal price, and when seek for clarification, as if we were the one who were not smart enough on how to place order and not smart enough to seek clarification from the staff. I strongly believe all the staffs need to be trained (better trained by the cashier) on stating all the terms and conditions before taking any order. What worst was the staffs were still talking about the terms and conditions among themselves at the vicinity after the cashier revised the price, which is disrespectful to us at all. We lived nearby and we have patronised this restaurant for no less than 6 years despite the foods were nothing to shout about (or sometime we even heard comments that their foods are not fresh or not cooked), we thought of with the relatively reasonable price and location near our house, we apply the "give and take" approach, and hope our small little contribution to the business revenue can help them to sustain. BUT WITH THIS EVENING BAD CUSTOMER SERVICE EXPERIENCE, THIS WAS THE LAST TIME AND NO MORE COMING BACK!!!! WE DIDN'T FEEL WE WERE VALUED AS THEIR...
