Black Seed Cafe — Restaurant in Melbourne

I have been coming to this café regularly since about 2017. Since the new owners have purchased the business, the quality of the food, ‘soul’ and level of care has declined rapidly. My last straw was the cashier this weekend who was taking a very long time to enter anything into the system that I was ordering, acting frustrated when she had to cancel the transaction and add another item on to my purchase. She did a laugh, looked up at me and told me “you need to tell me everything next time. not give it to me in dribs and drabs”. I was patiently waiting for her to find the item I ordered and ask if I wanted anything else when she had, because she was taking so long to find a simple item. Even the schoolkids at macdonalds can ask “would you like anything else?”. I added one drink to my purchase and then said I’d like soy milk in it. At the end of taking once again a very long time to enter it in, she says “we got there eventually” in quite a smart tone. I was shocked. What a way to treat a client? The quality of the food has gone from something I’d tell my family whom live hours away to come and visit to below that of a coffee club or any other franchised cafe you can find. Very disappointing. Firstly I want to say that the service was excellent, friendly and attentive. I have given this review 2 stars on this factor alone. Unfortunately my wife and I was unimpressed with the food and drinks. The coffee was extremely bitter. My wife ordered 2 eggs on toast sunny side up, runny yolks. She received 2 eggs; the first was spread out with a broken cooked yolk and the other egg yolk was cooked solid. I'm not sure why it was served up to a customer in that state, but something as simple as eggs needs to cooked correctly as ordered. I had the black seed angus burger. The beef pattie was nice, however the beef rashers required an acquired taste and I honestly would have preferred the burger without it. Secondly the tomato slices had an inedible hard core from being cut near the eye, which hadn't been cut out. Again a simple detail which was overlooked. On a small positive my daughter did enjoy her chips. Admittedly we had high expectations after being recommended Black Seed by the apartments where we staying and after reading the positive reviews. Came here with family multiple times - worst experience. “We Training staff, sorry she forgot…. “ ok no problem it happens. We went again the next month only to leave feeling unwelcome again. They take order and it’s a waiting game. First off their takeaway orders get served even when they come 15 min after you’ve ordered. 30 minutes later only one coffee arrived from the 4 drinks we ordered. Now I finished coffee and my companions are waiting. I complained to manager with same response of last months excuse, “did you place the order… sorry training staff”.. sorry doesn’t fill my stomach lady. People aren’t stupid. You can’t smile your way out of stupidity multiple times. Do better! If you can’t provide a service don’t let hungry people wait! 3 staff can’t get their act right.
