Eaten here regularly since it opened so this review is based on a very large longitudinal sample of meals and experience. Ambiance: “Crossroads” feels like a diner without being aggressively in your face about it. You don’t feel you’re faking it, sitting in a film set constructed to imitate a diner. This place is self-authenticating, it doesn’t have to pretend. Music is interesting and never obtrusive; mainly jazz although I have heard some Willie Nelson - can’t gripe about that. Papers to read - every place has papers - but where else has current and recent issues of the New Yorker? Nowhere that I’ve found in a life of eating out! Service: wait staff is attentive and helpful. Crossroads employs some young people (at industry rates) and gives them training so unbend a little if once in a long while you need to repeat an order. Food: never had a meal I didn’t like from light snacks to the Sunday roast. In particular, in the light snacks department, the ham, cheese and tomato toastie on grainy bread stands up against the best from anywhere, including far more expensive eateries in South and Port Melbourne - and Brunswick. Should you feel more sophisticated, try a Martini with it (excellent - cold, hard, dry as sandpaper and smooth) or a long black coffee - double shot. This place is a gem, without...
Read morePerfect Brunswick/Coburg brunch experience. Don’t come here for a quick dine-in, but for a lazy weekend brunch, you won’t find better vibes. It’s unpretentious, friendly, good value, and there’re many different spaces to choose from (sit by yourself by the window and watch the trams at the Moreland crossroads, grab a small table near the counter for a cute date or business lunch, grab a big table out the back for a family lunch or friends catch-up). I went there Saturday midday, and it was as busy as you’d expect, but never overly loud, and though the service was not fast, it was friendly and the wait staff were attentive and apologised for the delay. Coffee was good and the English breakfast was HUGE especially considering the price. Only suggestion as someone with British parents is I’d swap the onions and relish for baked beans for...
Read moreThe Crossroads is a great place if you have just popped out of the office, and you're looking for a good quality bite to eat which won't blow a hole in your wallet.
The prices are very good and fair, and you won't feel like you just got ripped off, like you might in a fast-food place, or an overrated café. The views are somewhat good, getting to see the crossroads of Sydney Rd and Moreland Rd, with lots of trams, as well as the occasional bus. The service (especially when it's not busy) passes the standard of most other places, with the staff being friendly and helpful.
If you're just passing by or if it's your regular spot, you won't be disappointed with the food, prices...
