Gilson South Yarra is a cafe and restaurant that serves modern Italian-inspired dishes. I have been there twice in the last 12 months, and I can say that they are consistent with their food quality and taste. The service is also friendly and attentive, and the location is convenient, just opposite the Royal Botanic Gardens. Both times I went there, my friend and I ordered the same dishes: Wood Fired Flatbread, White Anchovies, Burrata, Chicken Salad w. Wombok, Avocado, Cucumber and Buckwheat and Pepperoni, Chilli Honey Pizza. The portions were generous, the ingredients were fresh, and the flavours were well-balanced. I have not had better wood-fired flatbread or burrata from any other Italian restaurant in Sydney or Melbourne, so that is saying something. The flatbread was crispy and chewy, the white anchovies were salty and tangy, and the burrata was creamy and smooth topped with an aromatic olive oil. The chicken salad was light and refreshing, with a crunchy texture from the wombok and buckwheat. The pepperoni pizza was spicy and sweet, with a thin and crispy crust, and plenty of cheese and meat. On my last visit, I also ordered the Pear and Cucumber Gimlet, it was light, slightly sweet, and refreshing, and it went well with the food. Some people have said that the food at Gilson is too salty, but I would disagree. I think that the food is well-seasoned, but not overly so. Of course, it depends on your personal preference and tolerance, but I did not find the food too salty for my taste. The atmosphere at Gilson is always on trend, with a modern and stylish decor, and a lively and vibrant vibe. The cafe and restaurant is popular with locals, and it can get quite busy and noisy at peak times. There are a lot of stereotypical âinsta modelsâ galavanting around, taking photos of themselves and their food, as if their lives depend on it. I think that for some people, this could ruin the overall atmosphere, as it can be distracting and annoying. However, I guess it comes part and parcel with a pretty decor and pretty food, and it does not bother me too much. I think that Gilson is a great place to enjoy a delicious meal and a refreshing drink, and to soak up the energy and buzz of South Yarra. Excited to return some time in the new year!

one of my favourite restaurants, visited countless times both day and night, takeaway and dine in. everytime: delicious. beautifully located and perfect for outdoor casual dining in the warmer weather, but also as a luxurious date night inside. it can be anything. wine and nibbles or a all out italian feast. i love their selection of antipasti which pairs beautifully with their woodfired bread. pastas are also super fresh, tasty and generous! don't skip their fries too, they are tasty and addictive (however i believe they have now changed to a more thicker chip than frites. their tira is also giant yet light and indulgent. honestly all the food is faultless. service had become slightly slower and less attentive in recent years and as its popularity has grown, but the food is so delicious and vibe so nice it goes unbothered. i always see a range of crowds and ages here, there is something for everyone. gilson is a must visit, and again and again. (these pictures are from multiple visits over 3-4 years and some items may not still be available).

"JUST GO TO NONNAS HOUSE INSTEAD" was how I felt when I left. Came here for a dinner and left feeling fairly unsatisfied. My nonna runs rings around this place i was thinking. We had a 2 bit setup with 2 rounds tables of different sizes for 5 people. Its like we got the spare tables. Service was fast and friendly. The lady who served us for the night was top notch. The antipasti at the start was tasty but i could have organised a better spread at home. The servings werent enough. They were tasty but for this price I wanna know uncle luigi picked the olives himself and made the salami himself. The pizza had flavour but were nearly the sizes of my palms. If your big eaters this aint the place for you. Also 12$ fries.... lol The chicken salad was spot on though. Tasty and plentiful in quantity. đ The best part though was the a Tiramisu !!! Finally a proper dessert!! đ The venue is really loud fyi. Your wallet will hate you as well because its 'Toorak' đ€Ł The standard crowd would eat this up though. People who know though, will know.

So happy to have finally checked out this gorgeous gem opposite the renowned tan walking track and the botanical gardens đȘŽ My friend HAD to take me here as it is one of her faves so I let her do the honours of ordering and it did not disappoint! Started off with some frozen margs which were a 10/10 and definitely strong đ€Ș We then went on to have the burrata which was fabulous!! We got the woodfired flat bread to accompany it which was soooo fluffy and so tasty! We had the calamari also which was tender and perfectly crispy and salty! My friend did say though that the serving was not as much as usual so Iâll have to come back to try again đ We finished off with the pepperoni pizza which had a chilli honey on it đ¶ đŻ like cmon!! How amazing! Again the pizza base was so fluffy and delicious and it was a generous size! It was definitely hot!! The vibe was on point- we didnât book but got a cute little table out the front of the restaurant! Service was friendly and attentive!! 5/5 đ€đȘŽ

Went to Gilson for the first time for a private function. Their upstairs space is amazing â lots of natural light with a private bathroom (1) and balcony. However, it was a hot day and their ancient aircon wasnât working hard enough đ„” there wasnât enough airflow and guests were fanning themselves all day⊠not ideal for a popular Domain St venue. We had a set menu and entrees were fantastic. I loved the hot flatbread and burrata. The lamb ragu dish didnât have enough pasta given they were share plates for a big group. The linguine was dry and lacklustre, had to add chilli oil to add flavour. The pepperoni honey pizza was probably my favourite. Iâd definitely go back to try the other dishes because the a la carte dining experience downstairs looks lovely, but not in a rush to go back. At least service was fast and attentive so shout out to the function staff for walking up and down the stairs all day!

First time dinning here. Went for a good time date night and right from the beginning it wasnât a great start. Staff serving us was quite rude. Setting the table with anger as if someone had forced her to do it. She made faces and after she took our order she again gave that dirty look. My partner was fine with it because we came to enjoy the night but yet I was not happy for the fact we havenât done anything wrong but were treat like that. Food arrived and it looked amazing. To our surprise the pepperoni pizza was delicious and so was the fires. I am a big eater and I love food so normally we would order tons of food but thanks to that one server( the women in last pic) we just ended up ordering two dishes and made our way out. Honestly food was amazing but disappointed with the service. Not saying all the staffs were bad but high time to hire people who genuinely like working in hospitality.
