Just happened to meet a racist waitress. I’ve been to this place many times since 2016. The food and service was always on great standards, until today. I wanted to introduce this vegetarian restaurant to my friend, we went in, an Asian girl greets us, and I politely asked(in Chinese) if we could sit next to the windows. She said we cannot because apparently that seat is booked. We sat down somewhere else and ordered. Afterwards I saw another waitress(also Asian) moving two white guys(who were already sitted somewhere else) to that empty table next to the window. Weird. Since the first waitress told me that table is reserved. So I talked to my friend in Chinese asking why did she moved those guys there? We soon chatted other subjects. After 30 seconds of our conversation. The Asian girl suddenly stood in front of us and told us in ENGLISH that because the guys ordered too much food so they can use the table next to the window. Her voice was bit loud(probably wanted other customer to hear it?) and rude. What the heck? If you can understand Chinese and what I was saying, why don’t you just tell me in Chinese??? And why the hell would you eavesdrop on other people’s conversation??? The way she handled the situation was super unprofessional and stupid. I later confronted her asking why she would eavesdrop our conversation IN CHINESE and talk to us in english(i know that she is able to speak Chinese fluently) it felt very offensive. She only responded that she didn’t listen to our conversation and she thought we didn’t speak Chinese. Then why the hell would you jump to our table and suddenly speak about that window seat? We ordered three dishes and two drinks. The table was also bit small for us but you didn’t say anything about moving tables for us. Honestly I think she only helped those guys to the “reserved” table because they were white. I feel offended and saddened cause I really did like this restaurant. I’m never...

Visited the placed for the second time. The staff was just chatting amongst themselves while I come in and I had to walk up to grab their attention. We ordered the pancake and the hot n sour soup for entree. Three mains plus a fried rice, and a pot of tea. The tea was really bland, it taste like it only had few leaves in there. The young waiter brought the soup out and literally just delivered to our face when there are space on the table. We questioned the corn soup was not we ordered. I bring up the soup back to him, he took it and put it down again and said the hot n sour soup is coming. We were like why? We only ordered one soup. We had to raise our attention to the other waitress who seem like she knows her stuff, and she only said “oh really? That’s not what you ordered?” And took the soup back. The pancake we ordered was also very plain - as a panfried piece of dough… no flavour no additional garnish. When mains come out, the did the same thing by brining the dish to our face rather than finding a spot to put it down on the table. The service was surprisingly poor. That was really disappointing. The food were overall below average. The hedgehog mushroom taste like from the can and it was not soaked properly. We ordered a szechuan sauce potato stir fry, and there was only potato in it, this dish was $19.80 for a dish with less than one potato. The sweat and sour pork was probably the only dish that is about average if you consider quality vs price. I am not a very strict vegetarian for myself, and I could say I cook better at home than dining experience here. We were really excited to dine out only to go home with disappointment. Gong De Lin really have to up your game in terms of services and food quality. Not sure if I will visit again in...

Extremely disappointed in the service we "recieved" last weekend. We made a booking early that morning and we arrived 5 minutes early. We waited for our table and within 10 minutes the 4 of us were seated in a booth. But that was short lived as 20 minutes later, thinking they were coming to take our order, we instead were asked to move to allow a larger group to sit in the booth..... ? ... ok... No worries, we understand you want to cater for groups so we happily moved. Still ready and waiting to order now at our new table, we had to get the attention of staff as no one was serving us. Once we got the waitress attention, ordering seemed promising as she knew the item numbers by code and our drinks came out fairly prompt. We were then given 3 bowls for the 4 of us and told another was coming as we sat patiently awaiting out food. Not only did the 4th bowl not arrive, but as we watched new people be seated around us, it became more and more packed. We waited, waited... the new people were all being served before us, we even saw meals we had ordered, be served to those who had been seated 30 minutes after we had been! What was going on? We went to ask someone and were told someone would check. We never heard back and an hour passed with no food and no communication. Ridiculous! We had to leave hungry to get to our show and the waitress had the nerve to ask us to pay for drinks, 2 of which weren't even opened as we were waiting to have them with our non existent meals!! This place cannot handle the number of people they took on that night and no matter how patient or polite you are, trying to get any help or attention...

Let me start with saying that I’m a meat eater and request you all to not hold that against me. There’s also a story at the end of the review. This is a true hidden gem in CBD, amazing food at central location which is kinda actually hidden as it’s so so hard to find that name sign. I would never have found this place if my friends didn’t tell me about it. I was also expecting a half empty restaurant and was plenty surprised to see it almost full on my first visit. At the time of this review, I’ve been there 3 or 4 times if my memory serve right. Also I’m reviewing this as a restaurant that happens to be vegan/vegetarian, not the other way around. Food: Top class! That’s the whole review. If you think vegetables are bland, boy you’re so wrong and this place will show you how. Every single dish on the menu is a flavour bomb. Absolutely phenomenal. Stop reading this post and go eat there already (once you find that hidden entrance through a dodgy elevator) Staff: Very helpful and friendly. And I do apologise for my last visit where we came in close to closing time and don’t leave until 5 minutes to 10. Didn’t mean to be those guys but we were having a farewell dinner for our friends who are moving out of Victoria. Story time: I tried to bring my girlfriend here twice and both times she refused to come as this place doesn’t have any meat options, until finally one day she came here and told me “I should have listened to you last time when you told me the food here is amazing” And every man alive knows, that happens like once in a zillion years 😁

Wasn’t sure what to expect with such high ratings, but this place really surprised us. It’s so good, and the prices were super reasonable too. Came here on a weekday afternoon, it wasn’t crowded, people were coming in steadily, the vibe was chill, and food came out pretty fast. Quiet, relaxed spot for lunch. We tried: - Bean curd dumplings Never seen this before! Soft tofu skin wrapping dark leafy greens. Very light in flavor, but unique. I recommend adding some of the chili and vinegar on the table. The chili isn’t spicy, but really fragrant (like roasted chili flakes). - Braised pea sprouts with mushrooms Loved this one! Seasoned just right, not too salty, not too plain. I usually don’t like leafy greens, but this changed my mind. Only thing is the leaves were a bit long, kinda hard to eat in one bite. - Veg wontons in spicy sauce Not really spicy, but super flavorful. Wontons were a bit chewy, not mushy, which I liked. The wrapper’s quite firm, so make sure to coat it well with the sauce or it feels a bit dry. - Braised tofu with mushrooms From the menu photo, we thought it’d be a dry dish, but it came in a pot full of sauce. Really tasty and goes great with rice. Honestly, we ordered too much. If you're coming with one other person, I’d say: one veggie, one tofu/protein dish, and maybe a snack or dumpling to share, that’s plenty. Every dish was tasty and well done. I enjoyed it a lot even I am not a vegetarian!

EXCELLENT QUALITY VEGAN RESTAURANT IN DOWNTOWN MELBOURNE Gong De Lin is tucked away on level 4 of a narrow building on Swanston Street in the city centre. Look for the Noodle Kingdom sign in front of the building. Acces is via a small lift just inside the ground floor entrance. Level 4 is the restaurant and level 2 will give you access to the toilets. Its a vegan restaurant but it does that paradoxical thing of mimicking meat based dishes. Food quality is very good. Service isnt fast so give yourself time to sit and relax in the booths or tables that are quite comfortable and well spaced. People with mobility isues might struggle a bit here as the lift is quite narrow and the fixed booth seating may be a challenge. There are a few free standing tables and chairs so you could probably manage in a wheelchair if it isnt too wide. The food is fresh and simple and there is a small drinks list as well. The restaurant has a nice modern decor and is casual rather than smart. It's the sort of place you'd go for a catch up lunch with friends rather than a birthday celebration! Great noise control as there are sound baffles and soft furnishings throughout . Cash and cards but you need to spend more than $20 before they will split your bill. Two of us had food and chinese tea for ~$50. Not exactly cheap for a lunch but it made up for it in food quality.
