"This place seems to be more like a night club than a restaurant." Summary: Imagine a well-priced, well portioned meal. This is not that at all! It is doubly expensive, and the portion size is half as much as you would like. Details: Upon entering the restaurant, we were greeted by a terrible choice in music. It was loud, had a strong bass and if you didn't already have a headache, you may well do after. It was to the point that you couldn't have a conversation with the person next to you. I said to my friends "This place seems to be more like a night club than a restaurant." (1st red flag). We had to ask 4 times to actually get the restaurant manager to turn the music down to something reasonable. But even then, it was still too loud. It was so much hassle just getting him to turn it down a tiny bit was too much bother to continue. He snidely commented something like "we can't turn it down too much". Why not?? There were literally no other customers in the restaurant?? Don't you want your customers to have a good experience? (2nd red flag). Next we get to the menu. I have some allergies so I appreciate restaurants can struggle to cater for me. Anyway, the waiter says "you are in the wrong place" before even clarifying what I can and can't eat. It turns out there were some safe foods, but they couldn't be bothered exploring those with me. (3rd red flag). We chose the food but had to wait 40 minutes for it to arrive. (4th red flag). This is too long considering the restaurant was empty apart from us. Finally, after it had arrived the food portion was soooooo smalllllll and then most of the meat pieces in it were mostly bone. I felt like a vulture picking off what little there was. You can see this in the picture attached. The joke is that you are being charged so much for such a small portion. It is daylight robbery. (5th red flag). He looked very happy when we paid. No wonder, it is basically a scam. This place will leave you hungry and wallet hurting.

Disappointing Experience at Kahaani Indian Restaurant We visited Kahaani Indian Restaurant yesterday as a group of 11 to celebrate a friend’s birthday, but unfortunately, the experience was far from pleasant due to poor customer service from both the staff and the owner, Kunal. The issues began right at the start when we asked for a high chair for a child. We were told, rather unreasonably, that we couldn’t use more than one high chair per table. This was disappointing but we moved on. However, when we pointed out that the beer we were served wasn’t the same as what we had ordered, instead of addressing our concern professionally, they implied that we were trying to ask for a discount or free drinks. When we discussed the matter with Kunal, the owner, his behavior was shockingly rude. He started arguing in an unprofessional and disrespectful manner, telling us to “just pay the bill and get out” and suggesting that “if you cannot afford it, you shouldn’t come here.” Such remarks were not only insulting but completely uncalled for. Kunal even claimed, “we deal with people like you every day.” For the record, we paid the $600 bill in full, which clearly shows affordability was not the issue. The matter in question was about basic customer service and addressing a genuine concern about the order. Even if it was about a minor discount of $12 for the incorrect beer, the lack of willingness to resolve the issue speaks volumes about their priorities. To make matters worse, the food was not up to the mark either. There are several other Indian restaurants in the area, such as Divine Darbar, that provide far better food and customer service. Our celebration turned into a stressful and disappointing experience, and I would not recommend Kahaani Indian Restaurant to anyone.

My friends and I booked a table for 4. Upon arrival, we were told we had to sit outside as the restaurant was “fully booked.” Confused, we all looked around at the empty restaurant, rationalising that perhaps the other guests would arrive shortly after us. We proceeded to sit outside, in the freezing cold, besides two gas heaters which barely warmed the open space. After ordering, we were presented by some pretty standard entrees. When the mains, came out, however, we were shocked at the tiny serving sizes. I don’t usually say anything, but asked the waiter if it was possible to get more curry since 2 pieces of butter chicken for $26 (no joke, look at the photos) seemed a bit ridiculous. To make it worse, the restaurant was not “fully booked” and in the span of 2.5 hours, 3 other groups walked in. Two of these groups clearly didn’t pre-book and were allowed to sit inside. When we left, the restaurant had two tables filled inside, with the vast majority totally empty. Seriously, do not eat here. Even though the food is nice (pretty standard Indian), the service, portion sizes and treatment is atrocious. We still don’t know why we were treated so poorly. Unsure if it’s because we changed our booking from 7pm to 6:30 or because we booked through 'the fork' for a better deal. Photos: the butter chicken ($26) came out in a tiny bowl with two tiny pieces of chicken in a fair amount of gravy. The paneer ($24), also came out in a small bowl with two tiny bits of paneer. The rice ($28) for four servings ($7 each), came out ONE small bowl and was supposed to feed the whole table.

Mixed Experience at Kahani: Authentic Flavors but Room for Improvement

Introduction: My recent Saturday dine-out experience with friends at Kahani left me with mixed feelings. While the staff was welcoming and friendly, they fell short in explaining the dishes on the menu. Despite featuring an intriguing selection of uncommon Indian cuisine, the overall experience was marred by average starters and limited portions. Nevertheless, the main course dishes, such as Palak Paneer and Goat Curry, impressed with their authentic flavors. However, the high prices and small portion sizes left me feeling unsatisfied.

If the portion size and price are not significant concerns for you, Kahani is still worth a visit based on my overall experience. Despite the aforementioned drawbacks, the restaurant manages to deliver authentic flavors that surpass many other Indian dining options in Melbourne. If you prioritize taste and are willing to overlook the portion sizes and pricing, you are likely to enjoy the unique culinary journey that Kahani offers.

Atmosphere: The ambiance at Kahani could benefit from some attention. While the staff's warm reception created a welcoming environment, the overall atmosphere didn't match the premium prices. Enhancing the decor or introducing subtle elements to reflect the restaurant's unique Indian cuisine could greatly elevate the dining experience.

Service: The staff's friendliness was commendable; however, they lacked in adequately explaining the dishes. A better understanding of the menu and the ability to guide customers through their choices would greatly enhance the dining experience. Clear descriptions of the ingredients, cooking techniques, and suggested pairings would be valuable additions to the service.

Starters: The Charred Paneer Skewer (Adraki Paneer Tikkas) failed to meet expectations. The taste was rather average, and the portion size was below par. While the intention to offer uncommon Indian dishes is admirable, ensuring that each dish lives up to the culinary standard and satisfies customers should be a top priority.

Main Course: The Palak Paneer (Paneer & Spinach Curry) and Goat Curry (Ghar ka Ghosht) were the highlights of the meal. Both dishes boasted authentic flavors that transported my taste buds to India. However, disappointment struck when I discovered that the Goat Curry consisted mostly of bones with very little meat. Improving the meat-to-bone ratio in the dishes would be greatly appreciated, as the authentic flavors were praiseworthy.

Price and Portion Size: The major letdown at Kahani was the combination of high prices and small portion sizes. At a cost of over $40 per person, I expected a more generous serving that would match the price tag. The value for money felt disproportionate, leaving me feeling dissatisfied. Addressing this issue by offering larger portion sizes or revising the pricing strategy would greatly enhance the overall dining experience.

Conclusion: Despite some shortcomings, Kahani's effort to introduce uncommon Indian dishes and deliver authentic flavors is commendable. However, there is room for improvement, particularly in the areas of portion sizes, atmosphere, and pricing. Enhancing the serving sizes to match the price and creating a more captivating dining environment would greatly contribute to customer satisfaction. With continued evolution and dedication to excellence, Kahani has the potential to achieve greater success...

Get ready to pay $130 for a banquet for two — without drinks and without desserts.

We came here because of the 4.5-star reviews, skipping Aataa and Tonka to try something new. Sadly, the experience didn’t live up to the hype.

Ambiance The aroma of seafood mixed with masala greeted us at the entrance. Lighting and dĂŠcor were fair, not crowded, but tables for two were very cramped. Thankfully, the staff let us sit at a table for four even though we were only two.

Service Polite but lacking knowledge and attentiveness. When I asked whether the mutton kebabs were goat or lamb (since I dislike lamb’s gamey odour), I was assured they were goat — but they clearly had a lamb smell. The biggest disappointment was billing: the $65 banquet includes two mains, and we added a third. Instead of including the higher-priced dishes in the banquet and charging the cheaper one separately, they did the reverse, leaving us $10–20 out of pocket unnecessarily. At one stage the male waiter stood with his back to diners for an unnecessarily long time, and I had to get up and go to the counter myself. I also asked to pay at the table (they had a machine) but was told to pay at the counter with no explanation. Presentation of food was very basic, more like a budget Indian restaurant than one charging premium prices.

Price For two people, the banquet cost $130 without drinks or desserts, and portion sizes were still small. One tiny pani puri per person, papad without dips, and no dessert options at all — extremely poor value for money at this price point.

Food Overall, the food was below-average to average with very poor portion sizes.

• Pani Puri: Okay, nothing extra ordinary. • Kathi rolls: chicken filling was decent but dry, with no dips. • Mutton kebabs: cooked well but with strong lamb odour. • Goat curry: okayish, at least without gamey notes. • Daal: just average. • Paneer & prawns: passable, nothing memorable. • Papad served without any dip.

Comparison Chaskah offers far better paneer dishes. Three Brothers and Sher Singh deliver tastier food, better presentation, and at half the price. For a high-end experience, you’re far better off at Tonka or Aataa until this place improves.

Verdict Below-average food, very poor serving sizes, overpriced, and disappointing service. Not worth the...

Whether you're a connoisseur of Indian cuisine or trying it for the first time, Kahaani will not disappoint. It's a culinary narrative beautifully told, one plate at a time.
