I cant believe it’s been 8 years since I’ve visited Mastumoto Japanese restaurant in Brunswick 😊 It’s so nice to know that they’re still doing well after 17 years of being in business. We went for lunch on Saturday and decided to go for the Chef’s banquet with 7 courses plus coffee/tea. There were too many items on the menu we wanted to try so this was the best option for us and it was such good value at $58 per person.

The banquet started off with miso soup which had so much tofu in it, followed by a tobiko salad who doesn’t have crab meat and kewpie mayo! Next up with a sushi and sashimi platter which included a grilled salmon sushi and also scallop sushi. We washed the first 3 courses of our banquet down with a premixed Koyomi High ball – Yuzi and Lime flavour perfect for a warm day and I’m going to get some for my Christmas party in a few weeks. Moving onto the next course which was fried oyster, even though I’m not usually a big fan of oysters that are cooked, this completely blew my boyfriends mind and was so creamy! There’s no stopping with the food, it’s then onto the Teppanyaki grilled prawns with bean shoots.

There is then a short break while our lovely waiter cooks our beef sukiyaki in front of us, he was so patient and knew exactly how to cook everything to perfection. He recommended that the wagyu beef be cooked medium rare and dipped in the raw egg before we ate it. Best recommendation ever!

Finally after all that food we only had 1 course left which was dessert! My favourite Green tea ice-cream with red bean paste and also a fruit platter.

I just wished Mastumoto was a little closer to me, because I would come here all the time, it’s the perfect gem to have in a local area. Perfect for meals with families or a large group...

Careless Idiots

We are just back from this restaurant. They might have a good food… who knows. My family did not get any after waiting for 50 minutes. Here is our experience.

Idiots: There were only 5-6 tables occupied including us (roughly 20% of capacity) with three waiters serving tables and 2 robots. We made an order, and the male waiter made notes. We then spent 20 minutes before his colleague asked if we were OK. We mentioned that have made an order and are waiting. We were politely waiting until the waiter came back to ask if we were fine and how the food was. Surprisingly, for him we were still waiting, and they had not even started. I understand that delays may happen, especially during a busy time. But you had an almost empty restaurant and more waiters than visitors. You passed by our table hundreds of times and ignored it; none of you asked yourself why a family of four with a newborn in their hands has got nothing. I can only conclude that this place and the staff are absolutely disorganized, otherwise the staff are just blind.

Careless: When we found there would be no food and they were closing soon, we had to leave the restaurant. ā€œWe are leaving thenā€, I said. ā€œOKā€ was the answer. No real apology for their poor service; treated as trash.

The outcome: We cleaned their table for us as it was oily and spent 50 minutes in hope.

Positive notes: I taught my 8 years old son who left very upset and hungry that ā€œforgettingā€ should not be a proper reason for excuse, it’s usually a sign of persistent poor performance. Our family thanks the staff of Matsumoto for this showcase. Very well done; we could not make a better...

Really good fresh authentic Japanese cuisine. Reasonably priced especially for lunch as they have a great lunch menu. Waiter service to place your order however food delivered to table by a robot which adds an element of fun. The gyoza were homemade and exceptionally good. Nice cheery vibe. Licensed and BYO.

Had two visit to this place. Price is reasonable for their rice dish or lunch items. Can’t really say the same for their mains, it’s not quite the quality you would expect for that particular price. It’s not bad food it’s just not quite there yet. One thing to beware of, this is not an authentic Japanese restaurant, it is close but not quite authentic yet. Took us two visits to figure this out, was a bit like hmm something feels out of place... it was the menu! Normally Japanese restaurants (Japanese owned ones) don’t have such a long menu, they tend to focus on quality rather than variety. The service is also not quite up to standard. But if you are not a Japanese foodie like us you might not be able to tell the difference, I must say they did a pretty good job. In essence, if you are looking for an authentic Japanese experience, this is not the place to be. If you are looking for affordable Japanese food and don’t mind that little non-authenticity, this is the place for you. However we Japanese foodies are unlikely to return to this place.
