There's a reason why this restaurant can claim three successful venues. Their take on Asian fusion is interesting and very well executed. They offer a variety of innovative spins on the classic dishes of Thailand and Vietnam (mostly) along some items that pay homage to countries like China and Myanmar. It's also super nice to have a fully vegan menu to choose from at this spot.
I enjoyed a banquet of Chinese chive cakes filled with taro, eggplant ceviche with cassava chips, mini bahn mi rolls, Burmese tea leaf salad, banana blossom salad and salt and pepper banana blossoms. The chive cakes were two cute little pockets filled with veg and served with a nice dipping sauce - highly recommend.
The bahn mi was filled with what tasted like mock meat which was a nice alternative to a simple fried tofu. They were the perfect size to whet the appetite before the meal. They're also not overly filled, meaning you can stuff some salad inside if you're into dish combining. The banana blossom salad is an incredible addition, although I also really enjoyed it on its own. That said, I think I prefered the Burmese salad, which is texturally diverse and offers a satisfying brininess.
But my favourite dish of all was the salt and pepper banana blossoms, which are fried to perfection and topped with an incredible coconut chilli sauce. I would go back to Rice Paper again and again just for this amazing, crunchy, umami-rich dish alone. Loved it on it's own as well as wrapped in some peanut-lathered roti.
For dessert, I had the "Mum, I dropped my ice cream" and the coffee parfait. Both feature a lot of crumble, one vanilla and the other chocolate. The first dish is topped with condensed milk and white chocolate and is ideal for sweet tooths. The second is smaller and less sweet and is a nice alternative to a post-dinner coffee. If you're getting drinks, the whisky and apple highball is really nice and refreshing while the Pandan colada is rich and strong with citrus to cut the creaminess. It's absolutely delicious and served in a cute tiki glass.
I know this review is getting quite long but I can't finish up without commending the staff, who are extremely attentive, friendly and super knowledgeable about each dish on the menu, which is something I really value in a venue and shows a high level of...
ย ย ย Read moreIncredibly delicious food, amazing service! All food was incredibly delicious, outstanding presentation and quality, served in abundance, and surprisingly affordable for the quality-your guests definitely won't leave hungry! Mine were hugely impressed and very grateful. We held a birthday party in Rice Paper Scissors function room and enjoyed the Crispy coconut cups (stunning looking fine dining style and combination of flavours), flavour-packed Thai fried chicken (which was wonderfully crispy and crunchy to eat), Thai pork bao, Wok tossed greens and Crispy barramundi. Everything was absolutely delicious, looked incredible and was served in large portions. My personal favourite dishes were the crispy barramundi, wok tossed greens and Thai pork bao! The crispy barramundi was so soft, melt in your mouth and the nicest and most perfectly cooked fish I've ever tasted! The wok tossed greens were rich in flavourful sauce and the Thai pork bao was huge and perfectly fluffy. The Service was A1 by every person we dealt with from the organisation of the event to the final moment we left. Everyone at all points was so lovely and anticipated our needs before we even thought of them ourselves! (Huge thanks to everyone involved and especially Pruedonce, Audrey and Joel). The room also included every facility available from a projector screen, allowing the selection of your own play list and decorations to completely control and customise the ambience of your event. We had the private room for an ample 4 hours for lunch which gave us plenty of time to relax and enjoy the outstanding food, ambience and service! Pink + Ivory decorated the venue for us and they also did an amazing job! Everything looked stunning and ran like clockwork without a single hickup. The staff were also flexible and accommodated our last minute requests with ease! Can't recommend the venue highly enough for a meal, a function or an event -highly professional and will wow all your guests. All week later our guests were still talking about how amazing everything was and that it was the best event/venue/restaurant they'd ever been to! 5 star in every aspect! We left understanding why there was so much hype about this restaurant! Truly amazing! Do yourself a favour and an enjoy a...
ย ย ย Read moreBooked for a 830pm session tonight for 6 and was really looking for a nice meal in town. The atmosphere and vibe on Brunswick St was fantastic and our waiter was helpful and lovely. However, the biggest (and most important) part of the night was an enormous let down, considering the 4.5stars and over 1200 reviews.
We had the 5 course with non-alcoholic drinks which totalled over $400. Unfortunately from start to finish, the food was incredibly bland and without much flavour. It lacked the incredible flavours of Asia. Everything was simply bland. We had the following dishes, and it might be the ones to avoid, as they did not light us with anything to write home about. The positive was that all the individual components and ingredients were very fresh and on its own, very tasty. Broccoli salad - lacked any flavour and depth. It was almost it put together without any kind of seasoning. We had to try and toss it, thinking that we were missing something, but nothing. Even with the cheese. Barramundi fish - fresh fish, nicely done. Together with the fresh apple salad, was ok. I tried to like it, but it was still disappointing (I was a bit embarrassed at this point, as I had recommended the restaurant) Pork buns - was OK, but lacked flavour. One of our guests had to dip it in the satay sauce (from the Roti, for the little one), because it was bland. There was some hoisin sauce, but it just lacked depth of flavours. Croquette - nicely dressed up, but once again, it was boring and lacked any real flavours. It was bland and boring. Beef ribs - was OK. Served with rice, but it wasn't savoury enough to have with rice. By itself, it was only OK.
Unfortunately, I'm not normally a fussy eater, and like most things, but this was a bit sad, upsetting and embarrassing. We had to drop in for something else on the way home. We did tell the waiter - she was lovely and asked me if I wanted to speak to the manager, but I told her don't worry about it.. I didn't want to make a big fuss about it. Told her different strokes for different folkes. However, I thought about it on the drive home, and after taking everyone out for dinner tonight, I couldn't help but feel a little cheated, disappointed and...
