Sometime during high school Krispy Kreme opened its first store in Melbourne. I remember travelling for an hour from Ringwood East to the City just to get my donut craving fixed. I guess Krispy Kreme really made me fell in love with donut. Unfortunately donut is not a popular snack/dessert in Hong Kong and my favorite store in Hong Kong "Munchies" closed down end of 2016 (sad face). To no ones surprise I would visit Melbourne's much loved cult hit "Shortstop Donut"! I drooled just by looking at the photos online, they all looked picture perfect but do they taste as good as they look?
The store is located in the heart of Melbourne CBD, it's in a little lane down Little Lonsdale Street. They offer different types of donuts yeast raised, cake and French crullers made with a choux pastry base. They fry their donuts throughout the day so you know they are always fresh. Their donuts are kept simple, not over done with toppings and all the flavors are very interesting and they sure all sound amazing. We chose the Australian Honey & Sea Salt and Maple, Walnut & Brown Butter.
Maple, Walnut & Brown Butter: This was delightful, the base is a fluffy and light cake donut. The nuttiness of walnut balance out the sweet maple and the brown butter adds a slight bitterness to the donut. The perfect harmony, I could eat through the whole donut without feeling sickly sweet.
Australian Honey & Sea Salt: This one was a French Cruller. not what i expected. The donut is quite soft and feels a bit greasy as you bite into it. However, there was a lovely fragrant from the honey and the sea salt gave the donut a nice kick.
Overall, I loved the Maple, Walnut & Brown Butter and would definitely go back to try more flavors. The Red Velvet sounds SO GOOD! Beetroot cake donut base filled with cream cheese icing and dipped in a dark chocolate glaze! I'm drooling already! They also offer filter coffer which will go very well a donut. Store opens at 8:30 most days. Donut and coffee makes a perfect breakfast, you will have a whole day to burn all those...
Read morefew days ago, my friend and I visited this donut shop, which is located just a minute or two from Melbourne Central in a small laneway.
When we arrived, there were two staff members: a woman and a man. The shop was empty at the time, but the staff weren’t as welcoming as you’d expect from a specialty store. I headed straight to the donut display, and the woman rather abruptly asked for my order. I ordered a coffee, and she immediately ended the transaction, assuming that was all I wanted. When I mentioned I was going to order donuts, she seemed a bit annoyed that I was taking longer. I quickly chose two donuts, and she assumed I wanted them for takeaway without asking.
What was worse, when my friend was ready to order, neither staff member approached her. I could tell she was frustrated, but since she doesn’t like making a scene, she just told me she wanted to leave. After receiving my order, we left the shop right away.
This level of customer service is unacceptable, especially considering the higher price point of their items. I hope the owners invest in training their staff on basic customer service skills.
As for the food, the coffee and donuts were good, but given the price, they lean toward the expensive side. The store itself has a nice minimalist style.
Overall, I can’t recommend this place. No matter how good the product is, exceptional customer service is crucial to the...
Read moreThe last time I visited this shop it was for a coffee. And I've been thinking about those donuts since.
So I ordered 4 donuts. Now these are not commercial donuts but artisan donuts and you can definitely taste the difference.
I had the Earl Grey and Rose, Maple Walnut, Blueberry Cheesecake and the Triple Matcha.
The triple matcha was delicious, in fact they all were. The donuts didn't taste or feel heavy instead the flavours of each donut was prominent and some time later I could still taste the flavour of the donuts.
Yum! These donuts are so good, and they do home delivery. Yay hahaha. Happy days.
This place is a must visit.
Previous review - December 2018 I was walking past and I saw this cafe/donut shop. Some of the donuts were huge! They had a matcha versions, and a range of different flavours.
I don't eat these kind of donuts really so I settled for a piccolo latte. As you know I’m not a fan of really hot coffee but this coffee was lukewarm, which was different.
The service was excellent. Really personable and friendly.
The flavour of the coffee was ok, and if you like a donut w your coffee this is the...
