Horrible service and attitude from the manager. Ordered a dish that was vegetarian and asked for the fish sauce to be swapped as a part of dietary requirements. We were told by the female manager "then it will not taste good, and it's not my responsibility if it taste bad" in a standoffish voice. Not sure why it is necessary to talk to your customers in such a rude way?
After spending nearly $60 on the meals, we discovered that we were being charged extra 50 cents for extra sauce (even though we asked for the sauce to be swapped and it wasn't extra? Plus the manager didn't even mention this would cost extra). When we questioned this, the manager just stood over us and said loudly "I didn't tell you the cost would be extra because it's rude to tell customers this, it was a different sauce so you have to pay". We were so shocked at the attitude that she was showing her regular customers of 5 years, it was completely unnecessary... How surprising, so it was not rude for you to tell us "it's not my responsibility if you don't like the dish" but you think it's rude to just mention swapping the sauce is going to cost you extra?? We didn't care about the 50 cents itself, but charging customers extra without mention is just not right in principle.
It's understandable if you are charging us for EXTRA sauce, but in this case we only asked for the sauce to be swapped and it was discussed and agreed upon before we ordered with the serving waitress. At all other restaurants/cafes we have visited, this was never an issue, if there are extras to pay for, it would always be completely transparent and we are happy to pay.
We are appalled by the lack of understanding and poor customer service from the manager at this restaurant. There must be a recent change in management as we have always had great dinning at this restaurant until now, some of the prices have gone up and there are new faces.
Never coming back here and we'll be telling all our friends about this experience. Used to like this...
Read moreArrived with no booking Sat outside as busy restaurant inside on Saturday evening. Sat slightly too close to main foot path for my liking. There is better seating inside. Inside the restaurant there main sitting area which leads to a corridor (with further seating along it). Inside expect some anime OSTs playing softly in the background. The corridor leads to another room in the back with a few more tables. Had to pay prior to receiving meal at counter
Polite and efficient service.
This is my go to Japanese place in Melbourne and this review will be updated everytime I come! Reminds of my recent trip to Japan. Wish they had a shop in my local area of Springvale!
Ordered First reviewed visit - 02/2023 Udon with tempura ($15.00) The udon was served steaming hot in a daishi broth. The broth was full of umami and made you go ahhhh with every slurp. The udon itself was bouncy. The tempura included two of mixed vegetable, sweet potato and prawns. All were crispy and delicious. A masterful dish and at $15 it was a steal.
Chirashi don mega ($27.90) The chirashi don was equally impressive. Fresh sashimi on a bed of perfectly cooked sushi rice. Never go wrong with this simple combination
Second reviewed visit -04/2023 Sat inside on a rainy day. Nice and warm! Dishes were not served at the same time :( Had the udon again - consistent! Chirashi don mega - consistent! Nigiri salmon and nigiri aburi salmon (approximately $10.00 each) served 3 per plate. Fresh melty salmon!!! Though slightly on the small side this was some nice prices of nigiri!! Unagi don ($17.00) Classic unagi flavours with melty textures served on perfectly cooked rice. Delicious!! Prawn tempura roll ($15.00) . Unfortunately this was abit of a miss. Average due to the lettuce...
Read morePretty pleasant overall. I definitely have mixed feelings though. When we saw this restaurant when looking to have a bite for lunch it looked like itd be a really good place to go to. When we got seated, we were taken to a table near the back, which isn't really as nice and atmospheric as closer to the front, but not a huge deal. I ordered the green sencha tea and was a little disappointed when it came out in an ordinary mug and teabag. It tasted good with my meal at least. The oyako don was very good. This may just be personal prefrence, but I found it a little odd to find a lot of seaweed on my chicken and egg dish. The wagyu don beef was excellent. The sauce that came with it was a delightful pairing. The pork gyoza was pretty plain. I think they put sauce on the tray where the gyoza sat? I wouldve preffered having a seperate bowl for sauce. They only offer soy sauce as a table ready condiment. We ended up using the left over wagyu sauce for our gyoza. They definitely needed a sauce with how plain they were. I probably wouldnt go out of my way to come back and would want to try something else next time im in the area, but i would keep it as a back-up plan if nothing else struck my fancy. Definitely dont let any of my small displeasures stop you from coming though. Its a good little place for a easy...
