Read moreA strong and tasty Vietnamese coffee. A good crispy pork banhmi. The pork was good, the only thing was it wasn't crispy and no crackling added, so lacked a critical element which makes it next level yummy. The bread was average. Bit strange that we had to go to the counter to order. Sort of used to people coming to the table to take orders. Update: I was invited to return as the owner noticed that I didn't have an authentic experience first time round. Replacement banh mi bread was served as they had run out. So I was kindly offered another one with the normal bread.
Glad to say that the nicer bread elevated the crispy pork banh mi. It added crunch and life to the meal. And wasn't all air, with some bread to sink your teeth in. The pork was cooked better this time round too. I asked for a little more crackling, and got a bit more. It was less chewy than first time.
The fried onion garnish was a nice touch. Gave it a point of difference to other banh mi's. Overall it was a decent banh mi for the east. For a cafe it was pretty good. I've not had a banh mi at a cafe before.
The iced matcha definitely tasted better with ice-cream making it thicker and cooler. Much more refreshing than the first one that was served without ice-cream.
Had a lovely chat with Elizabeth. Fairly new cafe which is still establishing processes and ironing out kinks. But it's a good start with potential.
Worth a try if you're after some Asian fusion for brunch/lunch in Blackburn South. A light banh mi action.

Visited Star Fruit Cafe recently and left feeling pretty disappointed. While the food tasted fine, the overall experience was frustrating. I ordered the avocado on toast with a poached egg and my friend had the banh mi — both took 45 minutes to arrive. That kind of wait might be understandable if the place was packed, but it really wasn’t. It genuinely felt like our orders were forgotten or deprioritized, even though what we ordered should’ve taken less than 10 minutes to prepare.
To make things worse, the dish I received looked nothing like the photos I’d seen in reviews. The avocado toast in the pictures looked generous — double the quantity, thick-cut bread, beautifully plated. What I got was one thin, sad slice of toast with a bit of avo and an egg. Honestly, it felt a bit like a scam.
Wouldn’t recommend unless you’re happy to wait nearly an hour for something that doesn’t match expectations. Plenty of better...
