Walking into The Bakehouse Street Cafe in Rye, I expected a regular munch but ended up having what could only be described as a near-religious pastry experience. With lineage steeped in the art of baking – my grandfather could’ve given Paul Hollywood a run for his money with a loaf of bread, and my dad, a self-proclaimed pie whisperer – it’s no wonder I have high standards.
When it comes to pies on this side of the Peninsula, the heavyweight title match is clear: The Bakehouse Street Cafe vs. Brendon’s Cakes, Mornington.
It’s like choosing between your children, if your children were flaky, buttery, and occasionally filled with steak and kidney. These establishments are the crème de la crème, the peak of pastry prowess. If pastries had Olympics, these two would be neck and neck for the gold, with me as the overly enthusiastic commentator.
The Bakehouse, though, it’s got something special. Maybe it’s the way the staff greet you, their smiles so genuine you’d swear you’ve been friends for years. Or perhaps it’s the service, reminiscent of a time when being called “sir” didn’t require a suit and monocle, even if you’re in your Sunday worst, looking like marine wildlife in need of rescue.
The pies, oh the pies! They don’t just melt in your mouth; they do a whole performance, deserving of a standing ovation. I swear, if my hands were more dexterous, I’d grow extra thumbs just to give this place the thumbs-up it deserves.
The Bakehouse Street Cafe aren’t just serving up top-notch pastries; they’re dishing out joy, with a side of nostalgia for the days when customer service was less about the transaction and more about the interaction.
In conclusion, if you haven’t been to The Bakehouse Street Cafe, you’re missing out on a slice of heaven, served fresh daily with a smile.
It’s more than a cafe; it’s a beacon of bakery brilliance in Rye, a testament to the art of the perfect pie, and the embodiment of everything right in the world...
Read moreWent down to Rye, looking for a salad roll, it said on signage salad bar was open until 2pm. It was around 145.
Id asked if I could have a salad roll made up as the ones they had pre made weren’t an option for me due to dietary requirements (mayo etc..).
They said no they had washed the chopping board, which I found a real laugh because let’s be honest you could make a salad roll on a piece of paper that your going to wrap it in.
Anyway I asked the man if he would really rather loose business than make a salad roll and he said yes.
Lazy! Bad customer service, definitely not the way to make business succeed. I would never support a business who says no to a request that a customer is ready to pay for when it’s such a simple thing to do.
Wouldn’t recommend, will never return and I know others who won’t now due to the laziness of...
Read moreI came here this afternoon for lunch as a result of the positive reviews I had read. The lady behind the counter was lovely to start off. I asked for a chicken mayo sandwich and my husband an avocado panini. My sandwich was so salty I could only have 3 bites and had to stop eating. When I told the lady about the excessive amount of salt, Her response to me was “No one has ever complained. I make the sandwiches myself. I put 4 tsps of salt to 5 kg of chicken”. Infuriated, I brought my uneaten half sandwich to her and suggested she try it. I got no response. I was so disappointed with her attitude. I did not want a refund simply an acknowledgement. Sadly, I would not be recommending this bakery to anyone I know who will stop at Rye. I am sure the owners are lovely but this is not the way to...
